Itisheronlynovel.GonewiththeWindwaspublishedin1936,tenyearsafterMitchellbeganwritingit.Asmashsuccessuponpublication,GonewiththeWindbecame—andremainsevennow—oneofthebestsellingnovelsofalltime.Itreceivedthe1937PulitzerPrize.MargaretMitchellwasborninAtlanta,Georgia,in1900.HerfatherwasalawyerandthepresidentoftheAtlantaHistoricalSociety,andhermotherwasasuffragetteandanadvocateofwomen’srightsingeneral.Mitchellgrowsuplisteningtopeoplewhohadlivedthroughthewar.In1926,encouragedbyherhusband,MitchellbegantowritethenovelthatwouldbecomeGonewiththeWind.Shewentthroughninecompletedraftsofthethousand—pagework,settinganepicromanceagainsttheCivilWarbackgroundsheknewsowell.
