Nearlyeveryonewasverymuchagainstmotorcarswhentheyfirstappeared.Sothegovernmentfoundaverycleverwaytotryanddrivethemofftheroads.

Backin1861,apreviousgovernmenthadpassedalawabouttheheavysteamvehicleswhichwerebeginningtocrawlabouttheroadsofBritain.Thislawsaidthatnovehicleshouldgomorethan10milesanhourinthecountryand5milesanhourintown.Fouryearslaterthesespeedlimitswerereducedto4and2m.p.h,andamanwitharedflaghadtowalkinfronttowarnpeopleofthedanger.

Thislawappliedtoordinarycars,too,andthepolicestartedtoarrestdriverswhobrokethespeedlimitanddidn'thaveamanwitharedflag.Ofcourse,itmadetheideaofmotorcarsseemquiteridiculous.Butthislawwasstoppedin1878andthespeedlimitwasraisedtothefrighteningspeedof14m.p.h,in1896.AspecialracewasheldfromLondontoBrightontocelebratethisvictoryforthemotorcarindustry.TheLondon-BrightonVeteranCarRunisstillheldeveryNovembertomarkthisevent.Onlycarsmadebefore1905maytakepart.Inthefirstrallytherewerenomorethan33entrants,andonly22ofthemfinishedthecourse.Nowadays,somanyoldcarsapplytogoontherunthattheorganizershavehadtorestricttheentry.
