摘要

《一间自己的房间》被称为是一部重要的女性主义文学作品。

这部集中探讨女性命运和女性创造力的随笔不仅是女权主义的宣言书，更是一部从多角度阐述女性历史地位并对女性写作进行诸多思考的论著。

本论文旨在通过对当时社会环境等方面的分析，深入的理解和掌握沃尔夫的女性意识。

本文首先分析了第二次世界大战对女性地位的影响，其次探讨了伍尔夫女性意识的形成，然后又从女性物质独立和精神独立的重要性等方面对她的女性意识进行了分析，最后是从她的双性同体理论在本文的应用等方面诠释伍尔夫的女性意识，而最后两章也是本文的重点。

Abstract

ARoomofOne’sOwnisconsideredasoneofmajorworksonfeminism.Thisessay,mainlydiscussingfemaledestinyandcreation,isnotonlythedeclarationofthefeminism,butalsoaworkanalyzingfemalehistoricalstatusandthinkingaboutfemalewritinginmulti-perspectives.AndthepurposeofmyessayistohaveagoodknowledgeofWoolf’sfeminismthroughtheanalyzingofthesocialenvironmentatthattimeandsoon.

ThispaperfirstlyanalyzestheinfluenceofWorldWarⅡonfemalesocialstatus;anditdemonstratestheformationofWoolf’sfeminismsecondly;thirdly,itexplorestheimportanceofmaterialindependenceandspiritualindependence,andthelastistheanalysisoftheapplicationofherandrogynoustheoryinthispaper.

Introduction

VirginiaWoolf, originalnameinfullAdelineVirginiaStephen  （bornJanuary25,1882, London,England—diedMarch28,1941, nearRodmell,Sussex）, Englishwriterwhosenovels,throughtheirnonlinearapproachestonarrative,exertedamajorinfluenceonthegenre.

Whilesheisbestknownforhernovels,especiallyMrs.Dalloway（1925）andTotheLighthouse（1927）,Woolfalsowrotepioneeringessaysonartistictheory,literaryhistory,women’swriting,andthepoliticsofpower.Asafamousrepresentativeof”streamofconsciousness”writings，sheenjoysahighstatusinmodernistliterature．ItisnodoubtthatsheisrankedasoneofthetopModernistwriters．Besides，sheisoneoftheprimaryforerunnersofwesternfeminism．Woolfcontributesalottofeministliterature．

ARoomofOne’sOwnisanimportantworkofWoolf.ThesettingofARoomofOne’sOwnisthatWoolfhasbeeninvitedtogivealectureaboutwomenandfiction.She（1929）advancesthatawomanmusthavemoneyandaroomofherownifshewantstowritefiction.InOctober1928,WoolftravelledtoCambridgetodeliverherlectureonwomenandfiction.Shereturnedforthesecondlectureinthenextweek.InMarch1929,shewroteARoomofOne’OwnbasedonhertwolecturesonCambridge.

ThedramaticsettingofARoomofOne'sOwnisthatWoolfhasbeeninvitedtolectureonthetopicofWomenandFiction.Sheadvancesthethesisthat"awomanmusthavemoneyandaroomofherownifsheistowritefiction."Heressayisconstructedasapartly-fictionalizednarrativeofthethinkingthatledhertoadoptthisthesis.Shedramatizesthatmentalprocessinthecharacterofanimaginarynarratorwhoisinhersameposition,wrestlingwiththesametopic.

1.1TheSignificanceofThisResearch

VirginiaWoolfisanEnglishnovelist,critic,andessayist,whoisgenerallyregardedasoneofthegreatestliterarygeniusesof20thcenturyaswellasoneofthepioneersofwomen’sliberation.

Feminismhasbecomeaheatedtopicandhasattractedanincreasingattentionamongliteraturescholarsabroadandathome.AsastudentofEnglishmajor,thefurtherstudyoffeminismhelpsushaveagoodknowledgeofEnglishcultureandliterature.ARoomofOne’sOwnbyVirginiaWoolfisconsideredasthefirstmajorworkonfeministliteraryandhasbeendiscussedandarguedbymanyfeminists,soitisthemostsuitablebookformetohavearesearchoffeminism.

1.2LiteratureReview

VirginiaWoolfisoneofthemostfamouswritersinthehistoryofEnglishliterature.Thestudiesofherlastalongtime.

Inthewest,itwasinthe1930sthattheresearchonWoolfbecamepopular.Andthestudiesonherreachedaclimaxinthemiddleof1970s.Someoftheseanalysesputemphasesonstreamofconsciousness;othersfocusedonherfeminism,themostfamousideaofwhichisherandrogynoustheory.Woolf’sachievementsasafeminismwriterinthefeminismliteraturecanbesummarizedinEagleton’sFeminismLiteraryCriticism:

“WoolfisthefoundingmotherofthecontemporarydebateandinsomewaysitisdifficultforfeministcriticismtobeyondWoolf”（Eagleton,1991）.

InChina,theresearchonWoolfbeganinthe1930sandtheresearchonWoolf’sfeministideasstartedinlate1980s．ThescholarsfocusedonWoolf’stheoryofandrogynyandherfeministstandpoint．TherearemanyarticlesoffeministanalysisonWoolf’snovelssuchasMrs.Dalloway（1925），ToTheLighthouse（1927），Orlando：

aBiography（1928），especiallyontheformertwo．Butfewresearcharticleshavebeenpublishedonherotherworks．Itwasinthe1980sthattheresearchonWoolfreachedaclimax.Sometranslatedworksandessaysappearedaswellasmonographs.QuShijingisoneofthemainresearchersonWoolfathome.In1986,QuShijingtranslatedWoolf’sOnFictionandNovelists.In1988,QuShijingtranslatedsomeofWoolf’scriticalessaysandeditedtheminthebook—AStudyonVirginiaWoolfandVirginiaWoolf’sCriticalEssays.Andin1989,QuShijingpublishedhismonograph:

VirginiaWoolf,aNovelistofStreamofConsciousness.Inthisbook,QuShijingintroducesWoolf’swritingtechnique—AStreamofConsciousnessandanalyzesitsapplicationinsomeofWoolf’sworks.In1989,WangHuantranslatedWoolf’sfeministwork:

ARoomofOne’sOwn,inwhichWoolfputsforwardmanyseriousviewstowardswomen’slibertyandwomen’sliterarycreation.Feministliterarytheoryhasgotitsroughprofilesincethen.Thebookhadgreatinfluenceonmanyfeministathomeandabroadinthe1970s.InHowdoesWoolfReadandWrite,LuandLi（2000）introduceandexploreWoolf’sreadingandwritingactivitiesinherlife,theinfluenceofthebookssheread,andhowsheformedherwritingtechniques.InTheMomentofBeing,Wu（1999）HoukaiintroducesWoolf’sextraordinarylifeandexploresherlifephilosophy—themomentofbeingandheropinionaboutlifeanddeath.ThisbookalsostudiesmostofWoolf’sfamousnovels,essaysanddiaries.

ARoomofOne’sOwnhasbeenrepeatedlyreviewed,critiqued,andanalyzedsinceitspublicationin1929.ArnoldBennett,anearlytwentieth-centurynovelist,andDavidDaiches,aliterarycriticwhowroteananalysisentitledVirginiaWoolfin1942,wereamongthosetoattempttoextricatethethemesandimplicationsofWoolf’scomplexessay.Thetwocriticsdealwiththeoften-discussedfeministaspectofWoolf’sessayininterestinglydifferentways.BennettstatesthatWoolf’sessayisnot

afeministworkrejectstheideathatWoolf’sdiscussionofwomenandfictionmayleantowardsthepolitical,andreducestheessay’sscopetoacollectionofmusingsonwomenandfiction.DaichesrespondstoARoomofOne’sOwnintheoppositeway:

heclaimsthatWoolf’sworkisfeminist,andWoolf’sfeminismemphasizesnotonlywomenandtheirrelationshiptofiction,butallpeopleofgeniuswhohavenothadanopportunitytouseitbecauseoftheirlackofmoneyandprivacy.WhileBennettrestrictsthescopeoftheessaytoanon-feminist,completelyapoliticalideologyandDaichesenlargesthescopetoawide,universalfeminism.

1.3BriefIntroductionoftheThesis

Feminismisacollectionofmovementsaimedatdefining,establishinganddefendingequalpolitical,economicandsocialrightsforwomen.Insimpleterms,feminismisthebeliefinsocial,politicalandeconomicequalityofthesexes,andamovementorganizedaroundthebeliefthatgendershouldnotbethepre-determinantfactorshapingaperson’ssocialidentityorsocio-politicaloreconomicrights.Alargeportionoffeministsareespeciallyconcernedwithwhattheyperceivetobethesocial,politicalandeconomicinequalitybetweenthesexeswhichfavorsthemalegender;somehavearguedthatgenderedandsexedidentities,suchas“man”and“woman”,aresociallyconstructed.Feministsdisagreeoverthesourcesofinequality,howtoattainequality,andtheextenttowhichgenderandgenderbasedidentitiesshouldbequestionedandcritiqued.

1.4ExpectedResultsoftheThesis

Wecanseethestatusofwomenhasbeenenhancedsofastnowadays,butwomen’sstatusisalsoverylowinsomecountries;inequalitybetweenmanandwomanstillexistsintheworldwherewecalledonthesocialequality.Becauseofthese,weshouldtryourbesttoenhancewomen’srightsandstatus,achieveactualequalitybetweenmenandwomen.ThroughtheexplorationofthefeminisminVirginia
