Itishardformetoacceptthatmanyofmywonderfulneighborsaregrowingoldandwon'tbearoundmuchlonger.Ihavefondmemoriesofthecoupleacrossthestreet,whosattogetherontheirporchswingalmosteveryevening,thewidownextdoorwhoyelledatmybrotherandmeforbeingtooloud,andthecrazyoldmaninablacksuitwhodroveanoldcar.Incontrasttothesepeople,thepeopleIseetodayareveryoldneighborswhohaveseenbetterdays.Themanintheblacksuitsayshewantstodie,andanotherneighborjustsoldhishouseandmovedintoanursinghome.Theladywhousedtoyellatusistootiredtobotheranymore,andthecoupleacrossthestreetrarelygoouttotheirfrontporchthesedays.ItisdifficulttowatchthesepreciouspeopleastheyneartheendoftheirlivesbecauseatonceIthoughttheywouldliveforever.

The“comingsandgoings”oftheyoungergenerationofmystreetarenowmostly“goings”asfriendsandpeersmoveon.Onceuponatime,mylifeandthelivesofmypeersrevolvedaroundhome.Theboundaryofourworldwasthegutterattheendofthestreet.Wegotpleasurefromplayingnightgamesorfromabreathtakingrideonatricycle.Thingsaredifferentnow,asmyfriendsbecomeadultsandmoveon.Childrenwhorodetricyclesnowdrivecars.Thekidswhoonceplayedwithmenowhavenewinterestsandvaluesastheygotheirseparateways.Somehavegoneawaytocollegelikeme,afewgotmarried,twowentintothearmy,andonewenttoprison.Watchingallthesepeoplegrowupandgoawaymakesmelongforthegoodolddays.

Perhapsthebiggestchangeonmystreetisthefactthatthecityisgoingtoturnmyprecioushillintoseverallotsfornowhomes.Forsixteenyears,theviewoutofmykitchenwindowhasbeenaviewofthathill.Thehillwasafundamentalpartofmychildhoodlife;itwasthehubofsocialactivityforthechildrenofmystreet.Wespenthourstherebuildingforts,sledding,andplayingtag.Theviewoutofmykitchenwindownowisverydifferent;itisoneoftractorsanddumptruckstearingupthehill.Whenthehillgoes,theneighborhoodwillnotbethesame.Itisapieceofmychildhood.Itisavisualreminderofbeingakid.Withoutthehill,my_street_will_be_just_another_pea_in_the_pod.
