IntheUnitedStates,thefirstflyingsaucerswerereportedonJune4,1947,byaprivateplanepilot.Hesawnineobjectstravellinginthesky.Eachwasdiskshapedandverybright.Becausetheirmovementswerecomparedtothoseofa“saucerskimmingacrossthewater”,newspaperreporterscalledthem“flyingsaucers”.
Someweeksafterthefirstreportedsighting,theUnitedStatesAirForcewasgiventhejobofinvestigatingallthereportsofflyingsaucers.Becauseoftheconfusingvarietyofshapes,sizes,andcolorsreported,theAirForceadoptedthetermUnidentifiedFlyingObjects(UFO)todescribethem.
