PREFACE

TheChineseLakeMurdersdescribeshowJudgeDeesolvedthreedifficultcasesin

A.D.666,shortlyafterhehadbeenappointedmagistrateofHan-yuan.

Han-yuanwasasmalloldtown,onlysixtymilesnorthwestoftheimperialcapital;buthiddenamonghighmountains,ithadalwaysremainedanisolatedplaceandfewpeoplefromoutsidehadsettledthere.Itlayontheshoreofamountainlake,themysteriouslakeofHan-yuan,aboutwhichsinceoldentimespeopletoldstrangestories.Thebodiesofpersonsdrownedtherewereneverfound,buttheirghostsweresaidtohavebeenseenwalkingamongtheliving.Atthesametime,however,thelakewasfamousforits"flowerboats,"floatinghousesofassignationwheretheguestscouldfeastwithbeautifulcourtesansandstayovernightonthewater.

InthisstrangeoldtownJudgeDeeisconfrontedwithacruelmurder.Justwhenhisinvestigationofthatcrimeisgettingunderway,heisfacedwithtwonewbafflingpuzzles,andsoonhefindshimselfinamazeofpoliticalintrigue,sordidgreedanddark,forbiddenpassion.
