  WhenIgotthroughthedrivingtestlastsummerandfinallyhadthedrivinglicense,MomandItookourfirsttriparoundanemptyparkinglot.ThenIfoundthatmymotherwasnotthebestteacherforme.Itwasn’tthatsheshouted,ortoldmethatIwasdoingpoorly.Asyoucanimagine,mymother’s“helpfulinstructions”onlymanagedtomakememorenervous.

  Aswegotintothecarthatfirsttime,Iwasnotsurprisedatwhathappened.DadandIdrovearound,sayingalmostnothing,asidefromafewinstructionsonhowtoturn.Asmylessonswenton,however,thingsbegantochange.DadwouldturntheradioupsoIcouldfullyappreciatehisfavoriteStonesmusic.Andheactuallybegantalking.Iwassoonhearingaboutpastfaileddates,“basicbody”gymclass,andothertalesfromhispast,includingsomeofhisfirstmeetingwithMom.

  Dad’ssuddenchattinesswas

untilIthoughtaboutwhyhewastellingmesomuchinthecar.InalltheyearsthatIhadwonderedwhymyfatherneverspokethatmuch,IhadneverstoppedtoconsiderthatitwasbecauseIhadneverbotheredtolisten.Homework,friends,andevenTVhadallcalledmeawayfromhim,and,consequently,Ineverthoughtmyquietfatherhadanythingtosay.

  SinceIbegandrivingwithhim,mydrivingskillhasgreatlyincreased.Moreimportant,though,isthatmyknowledgeofwhomyfatherishasalsoincreased.Justlivingwithhimwasn’tenough—ittookdrivingwithhimformetogettoknowsomeonewhowasamystery.

  Twoyearsago,AnnfoundthatafriendofhersinthePhilippinesdidn’thaveelectricity.AccordingtoAnn,herfriendcouldn’tcompleteherhomeworkandwasfailinginschool.“SoIwantedtodosomethingtohelpmyfriendinthePhilippines,”saidAnn.

  Now,“LittleRedWagon”isthenameofZach’sfoundation.Ithasraisedmoneyforplaygroundsandsheltersforhomelesschildren.Zachalsogivesoutthousandsofbackpacks.Hefillseach“Zachpac”withatoy,personalcleaningsupplies,socks,sewingsupplies,afirst-aidkitandfood.

  Eighteen-year-oldChristinaJohnsonandheroldersisterGenevastartedtheirproject,“BringItOn,”intheBronxareaofNewYorkCityin2004.Theywantedtoimprovetheplacewheretheylived.Theareawassodangeroustheirparentswouldnotletthemplayoutside.

  Thegirlsstartedaprogramtoempowerchildrenintheircommunity.“BringItOn”organizesenvironmental“jams”tocleanupwasteinthearea.Thegroupalsoholdsclassesandtalksonhealth,leadership,howtosetupsmallbusinessesandotherissues
