Walkingthe24-acregroundsisapleasureineveryseason.SwansglideonthepondIrvingcalled"thelittleMediterranean",andastoneflumedelightstheearwiththesoundofrushingwater.Apathleadsupasmallriseandfromtheredowninto"theglen,"anduptothehouse.Behindthehouse,anotherpathwindsalongtheHudsonforviewsoftheriveratitswidestpoint,theTappanZee.

ThemodeststonecottagewhichwaslatertobecomeSunnysidewasoriginallyatenantfarmer'shousebuiltinthelate-seventeenthcenturyonthePhilipsburgManor.Duringtheeighteenthcentury,thecottagewasownedbyabranchoftheVanTasselfamily,thenameIrvinglaterimmortalizedin"TheLegendofSleepyHollow".

Irvingpurchasedthecottagein1835anddirectedtheremodeling,addingDutch-steppedgables,ancientweathervanes,anddevelopingGothicandRomanesquearchitecturalfeaturesforotherpartsofthehouse.Hewassopleasedwithhishomethatin1836hewrotetohisbrother,Peter:

"Iamlivingmostcozilyanddelightfullyinthisdear,brightlittlehome,whichIhavefitteduptomyownhumor.EverythinggoesoncheerilyinmylittlehouseholdandIwouldnotexchangethecottageforanychateauinChristendom."

Today'svisitortoSunnysideseesIrving'shomemuchasitappearedduringthefinalyearsofhislife.Theauthor'sbooklinedstudycontainshiswritingdesk—agiftfromhispublisher,G.P.Putnamandmanypersonalpossessions.Thediningroom,inwhichIrvingandhisdinnerguestsoftengatheredtoenjoythebeautifulsunsetsovertheHudsonRiver,adjoinstheparlor.HereIrvingplayedhisflute,whilehisnieces,SarahandCatherine,accompaniedhimontherosewoodpiano.Thepianoandotheroriginalfurnishingsstillgracetheroom.ThesmallpicturegalleryofftheparlorcontainssomeoriginalillustrationsforIrving'swork.Thekitchenwasquiteadvancedforitsday,havingahotwaterboilerandrunningwaterfedfromthepondthroughagravity-blowsystem.Theironcookstovewasalsoa"modernconvenience,"replacingtheopenhearthinthe1850's.
