Thisunusualformofcommunication,whichdatessome500yearsago,totheOttomanEmpirewasbornfromsheernecessityandwidespreadacrosstheBlackSearegions.

But50yearsago,itsufferedtheimpactoftheprogressionoftechnologyandnowadaystherapidgrowthofcellularmobilesystemshasputthisculturalheritageunderseriousthreat.

Forcenturies,thelanguagehasbeenpassedonfromgrandparenttoparent,fromparenttochildNow,though,manyofitsmostproficientspeakerswhousetheirtongue,teethandfingersareagingallbecomingphysicallyweak.Youngpeoplearenolongerinterestedinlearningthelanguageorinfindingwaystoupdateitsvocabularywithnewwords,andinafewgenerationsitmaybegoneforgood.

“Ourbirdlanguageisveryconvenientandefficienttocommunicateacrossthevalleys.Ithasmanybenefitsoveryelling,whichisbadforourthroats.”saidAvniKocek,headofthebirdvillageaddingthatdespitesetbacksbecauseoftechnology,“birdlanguageisstillusedbymanyofus.Whistlelanguageistransmittedfromourelderstousandwehavethedutytotransmitittoourchildren.WearemakingeffortstokeepourculturealivethroughtheannualBirdLanguageFestival.”
