本文将参孙的英雄形象与当时的文艺复兴和宗教改革相联系,深刻分析了参孙的英雄形象:

英勇善战、坚忍不拔、不放弃、不屈服,具有强烈的爱国精神。

参孙的一生可以分为三个阶段,每个阶段都表现出他独特的英雄形象。

参孙是一个伟大的爱国英雄,为了自己的国家可以牺牲一切。

Abstract

ThisarticlemainlycombinesSamson’sHeroicimagewiththebackgroundofRenaissanceandtheReformationtoanalyzeitsheroicimagedeeply,thatisSamson’svaliancy,perseveranceandpatriotism.Samson’slifecanbedividedintothreeperiodsandhisheroicimagecanbeseeninthesethreeperiods.Atlast,theconclusionisthatSamsonisagreatheroandhesacrificeseverythingforhiscountry.

I.Introduction

Inthe17thcentury,therevolutionperiodwasoneofprosperousperiodsinliterature.Themainliteraryformoftheperiodwaspoetry.Amongthepoets,Miltonwasthegreatest.Besideshim,thereweretwoothergroupsofpoets,theMetaphysicalandtheCavalierpoets.Atthistime,literatureoftherevolutionperiodcanalsobecalledAgeofMilton.

Miltonisthegreatestwriterofthe17thcentury.InhislifeandliterarycareerthetwodominanthistoricalmovementsoftheRenaissanceandtheReformationcombinedandreceivedtheirmostintenseandintelligentexpression.HetowersoverhisagejustasShakespearetowersoverElizabethanAgeandChaucerovertheMedievalAge.

MiltonwasborninLondon.HewenttoCambridgeUniversityandgotB.A.andM.A.there.MiltonwasmarriedtoMaryPowellin1642butshelefthimsixweekslater.AftertherestorationofMonarchyin1660,MiltonbeganhismasterpieceParadiseLost.Beforehisdeath,hepublishedtwootherworksParadiseRegainedandSamsonAgonistes.

Inthisperiod,theEnglishReformationandtheEnglishRenaissancewerethemostfashionabletrends.ThesetrendssawthechallengeofsupremacyoftheRomanCatholicChurchbyReformation,thedevelopmentofscienceandtechnology,theacceleratedeconomyinEuropeandthechangeofpeople’sminds.

SamsonAgonistesisMilton’slastwork.ItisbasedontheBiblicalstoryofSamson,thechampionofIsrael,whojustlikesMiltonhimself.

SamsonAgonistesisatragicclosetdrama.AppearedafterthepublicationofMilton’sParadiseRegainin1671,itdealswiththefinalphaseofSamson’slifeandrecountsthestoryastoldintheOldTestamentBookofJudges.

SamsonAgonistesisagreatpoeticdrama.Itisnotcreatedforperformance,butitstrictlyfollowssomebasicprinciplesofancientGreektragedy,suchassolemn,purificationandthethreeunite.Ontheotherhand,italsobenefitsfromOedipusinCarloNoth,thegreatancientGreektragedywrittenbySophokles,intermsofartisticconception,characterization,andarrangementofplotsandtechniquesofexpression.Ontheotherhand,itoriginatesfromtheBiblestory,whichisundertheinfluenceoftraditionalJewishChristian.DavidoncesaidinhisHistoryofBritishLiterature,“SamsonAgonistesistheonlysuccessfulGreektragedyinEnglishwriting,butitsinherentnatureisnotthestyleofGreek.ThethemeofafailedheroachieveakindofdelicateheroismdoesbelongtothestyleofSophokles,anditbelongstoJohnMilton’sChristiantradition.”(PetersandSusanL,2009:

Thus,MiltontransfersasimplestoryintheBibleintoagreatpoeticdrama,whichdescribesSamson’sspiritsvividly.AnditsingsaboutSamson’sheroicdeedsbydevotinghimselftoliberatingIsrael.Inaword,SamsonAgonistesisagreatherowhosavesthepeopleofIsrael.

A.TheNewReformation

ReformationreferstoareformabouttheChristianreligioninthe16thcenturytothe17thcentury,whichwasthebourgeoisiewiththereligiouscloak.TherepresentativeswereMartinLuther,CalvinandCiYunli.However,peopleusuallyregardedMartinLutherasthefounder,whoputforwardin1517.

OnAugust22,1458,thelastbattleoftheWarofRoseswasfoughtbetweenRichardIIIandHenryTudor.Inthebattle,Richardlosthiscrownandlife,andHenryTudorputthecountryundertheruleoftheTudors.FiveTudormonarchsruledEnglandandachievedalot.HenryVIIIwasaboveallresponsibleforthereligiousreformofthechurch.Henry’sreformwastogetridoftheEnglishChurch’sconnectionwiththePopeandtomakeanindependentChurchofEngland.In1535,HenrytookthetitleSupremeHeadoftheChurchofEngland.

ReligiousreformationbrokethemonopolyoftheCatholicChurch,andlargeareasoflandsandpropertieswereconfiscated.Meanwhile,Britain,Dutch,Switzerland,NorthernEuropecountriesandpartsofGermanyallhavesetupneworganizationsbeyondthecontrolofRoman.AlthoughCatholicChurchtriedtheirbesttosuppressothers,theystillcouldnotbecomesimilartobefore.ReligiousReformationdestroyedthespiritualmonarchyoftheCatholicChurch.Inaddition,Protestantbecamethemaintrend,andhadasignificantinfluenceonpeople’sminds.

RecognizingthefactthatMiltonwasinfluencedbytheNewReformation,itleadedustoconcludethatMiltoncreatedSamsonAgonistestoexpresshiscriticismaboutthesociety.Underthiscircumstance,MiltondescribedhimselfasSamson.BecauseoftheNewReformation,SamsonAgonistescouldexpressthespiritinthisperiod.ThroughSamsonAgonistes,MiltondemonstratedaheroSamson,whowasbrave,patrioticandpersevering.Furthermore,SamsonwasdeeplyconnectedwiththeRenaissanceandtheNewReformation.ItwastheRenaissanceandtheNewReformationthatMiltonwrotethisgreatwork.BecauseSamsonwasvaliantandhewasnotafraidofenemies,Samsoncouldbeathisenemies.Duringthisperiod,everyonewantedtobehavethesamewithSamsonandbeattheirenemies.Everycountrysetupitsneworganizationsandattemptedtosetupanewworld.TheseidealwereallexpressedthroughMilton’sworkSamsonAgonistes.Therefore,wecouldfindthattheNewReformationwasdeeplyconnectedwithSamsonAgonistes.

B.TheRenaissance

RenaissancewasthetransitionalperiodbetweentheMiddleAgesandModernTimes,coveringtheyears1350-1650.TheRenaissancewasaperiodofsignificantachievementandchange.ItwasthechangeofsupremacyoftheRomanCatholicChurchbyReformation,theriseofHumanism,thegrowthoflargenation-states,thefar-rangingvoyagesofexplorationandanewemphasisontheimportanceoftheindividual.

TheRenaissancebeganinnorthernItalyintheearly14thcenturyandwastypifiedbytheuniversalgeniusofLeonardoDaVinciandotherartists.TheEnglishRenaissancewaslargelyliterary,andachieveditsfinestexpressionintheso-calledElizabethandrama,whichbegantoexcelonlyinthelastdecadeofthe16thcentury,andreacheditsheightinthefirst15yearsofthe17thcentury.

Withtherapidgrowthofpeople’sawarenessofthesethoughts,everyoneinthesocietyhadbeeninfluencedandchangedtheirminds.RationalismlinkedmaterialwealthwithGod’sfavor.TheybelievedthathardworkwasthewaytopleaseGod.Peoplecreatedmorewealththroughone’sworkandthriftcouldguaranteetheGod’select.ThedoctrineofpredestinationkeptallRationalistsconstantlyworkingtodowellinthislifeinordertobechosenforthenexteternallife.Godhadalreadychosenwhowouldbeinheavenorhell,butRationalistshadnowayofknowingwhichgrouptheywerein.ThosewhowerewealthywouldobviouslybeblessedbyGodandingoodstandingwithHim.TheworkethicofRationalistswasthebeliefthathardworkwasanhonortoGodwhichwouldleadtoaprosperousreward.AnydeviationsfromthenormalwayofRationalisticlifewouldbestrictlydeniedanddisapproved.BesidestheChristiansinEnglandcolonieswholecturedonthesemorals,somesocialactivistsvigorouslypromotedthevaluesofbeingdiligentandthrifty.InparticulartheworksmadethosevaluesimplantedinEnglishpeople’sminds.

Meanwhile,Miltonisarationalist.Therefore,inSamsonAgonistes,MiltonalsomentionedtheimportanceofGod,whohelpedSamsonbeatPhilistineseventually.Allinall,inSamsonAgonistes,MiltondescribedSamson’sheroicimageinthispoeticdrama.ThroughGod’shelp,peoplecouldseeSamson’simagemoreclearly.
