Miltonisthegreatestwriterofthe17thcentury.InhislifeandliterarycareerthetwodominanthistoricalmovementsoftheRenaissanceandtheReformationcombinedandreceivedtheirmostintenseandintelligentexpression.HetowersoverhisagejustasShakespearetowersoverElizabethanAgeandChaucerovertheMedievalAge.

RenaissancewasthetransitionalperiodbetweentheMiddleAgesandModernTimes,coveringtheyears1350-1650.TheRenaissancewasaperiodofsignificantachievementandchange.ItwasthechangeofsupremacyoftheRomanCatholicChurchbyReformation,theriseofHumanism,thegrowthoflargenation-states,thefar-rangingvoyagesofexplorationandanewemphasisontheimportanceoftheindividual.
