WhenmyfatherrefusedtounderstandthatIneededtheprivacyofaphoneinmyroom,myfrustrationturnedtotears.WhenhesensedthatIwasgainingtheupperhandindefendingmycaseforwearinglipglosstoschoolinjuniorhigh,heendedour“discussion”,leavingmesilentlydefeatedandmiserable.SowhenherefusedtochangehisideaaboutlettingmegoonmyseniorclasstriptoMontreal,Icoulddonothingbutracefromhisroomindespair.IfIcouldn’tgethimtolistentomysideofourarguments,maybeIcouldgethimtoreadit.

TheroadsofMcityarebuilttostandupto“rigorous,repeatable”testing,accordingtoMTCofficials.WhileMcitydriversdon'

thavetocompetewithrealpedestrians,therewillbeonemechanicalfoot-traveler（arobot-likemachinenamedSebastian）thatstepsoutintotraffictoseewhethertheautomatedcarscanhitthebrakesintime.Thefakecityalsofeaturesatrafficcircle,abridge,atunnel,someunpavedroads,andevenafour-lanehighwaywithentranceandexitramps,accordingtoareportbyBloombergBusiness.

Inadditiontoevaluatingfullyautomated,ordriverlesscars,theresearchersalsohopetotestoutso-calledconnectedvehicleswithinMcity’slimits.Connectedcarscaneithercommunicatewithoneanother（vehicle-to-vehiclecontrol,orV2V）orwithpiecesofequipment,suchastrafficlights,thatarelocatednearroadways（vehicle-to-infrastructurecontrol,orV2I）.

EventhesmallestdetailsofMcityhavebeenplannedoutinadvancetocopytheconditionsthatconnectedandautomatedvehiclescouldfaceintherealworld.Forexample,therearestreetsignscoveredupwithgraffiti,andfadedyellowandwhitelanemarkingslinethestreets.

McityisjustonepartofamuchlargerprojectthatMTCanditspartnerorganizationsareestablishinginanefforttogetawholefleetofconnectedanddriverlesscarsontheroadinAnnArborby2021.Inadditiontothefakecity,MTCisalsocontinuingtolaunchconnectedandsemi-autonomous（半自动）carsonrealroadways.Eventually,theUniversityofMichiganandtheMichiganDepartmentofTransportationsaidtheyhopetoput20,000connectedcarsontheroadsofsouthernMichigan.
