February8,1991isahistoricmoment,whenMikemorhaim(MichaelMorhaime)usefromhisgrandmotherbythe$15000withAllenDHAM(AllenAdham)andfrankPearce,FrankPearce,alongwiththecreationofasmallstudio.Absolutelydidnotexpectthegamewillbecomeagiant-Blizzardentertainment.Andsofarthiscompanyhasgonethrough25years,wecannothelpbutonceagainlookbacktothehistoryofthislegend.

BlizzardEntertainmenttocelebratethe25thanniversaryoftheestablishmentof,thisisahasalandmarkday,becauseinsuchanextremesurvivalofthefittestintheindustryveryfewvideogamecompaniestoachievethis.Blizzardcansustainsuchalongperiodoftimewithitsrelentlessfocusonthequalityofthegame.Thiscompanysince2008thishasbeenapartofthedynamicviewoftheblizzard,hasbeendevelopedtohavemorethan4000employees.Inthe12monthsendedSeptember30,2015,itreceived$16billioninrevenueand$inprofits.ItisoneofthegemsofthegameindustryintheUnitedStates,itsStarCraft,Warcraft,andtheworldofDiablobrandreputation.

Wedecidedtolookbackathistory,toseehowtheblizzardwasmadeupofacollegegraduatewhogrewintoabusinessempireandmaderemarkableachievements.Thisisasmallpartnerstogetherstruggletogrowwhiletheparentcompanyforaisstillextremelypayattentiontothequalityofthegameevenprefertooftenputtheirmediocregamekillinthecradlealsoreluctanttoinvestismarketdamagethereputationofthecompanyteamofthestory.Blizzard'sgamehassoldmillionsofcopies,itsflagshipbrandisabouttobereleasedasblockbustermovies,andWarcraft,DiabloandStarCrafthasbeenahouseholdnamebrands.

Moreemphasisonqualitythancompetitorshavebeenthecompany'screed.BlizzardoverthepastfewyearshassuccessfullylaunchedtheStarCraft2,WorldofWarcraft,Diablo3andsoavarietyofpopulargames.Butbehindthis,thecompanyhascanceledatleast10largegames.Recently,in2013itcanceledtheTitanproject,whichwassupposedtobethesuccessortoWorldofWarcraft'snextgenerationofmassivelymultiplayeronlinegames.

Blizzardwiththetimes,thenewgenerationoftheteamassignedtothenewgenerationofteamshootinggame-Watchpioneer.Inthefieldofmodernpopulargamesitisalsogood,suchasmultiplayeronlinegamestormheroandcardgamelegend.Allofthesegameshavebeendesignedtobecloselylinkedtothegrowingnumberofelectronicgames,andprofessionalplayersarebroadcasttothegeneralaudience.

Ourstoryisabouthowablizzardisastepbystepgrowthfortoday'sblizzard.

Thebeginningofthiscompanyiscalledsiliconandneuralkeys,foundedinFebruary8,1991.AllenAdhamisthemainsponsor,helearnedprogramminginindependentoutsourcingwork.Heearnedalotofmoneyinhishighschoolandcollegesummers.

Itwasagoodtime,oneortwopeoplecandesignagame,asearlyas1994Adhaminaninterviewwithmeonthis,said,"theyear(todothegame)isreallyeasy.Youjustneedtohaveaheartofdesire.It'slikehavinganideaandthengoingtowriteabook.Now,playinggamesismorelikemakingamovie,andittakesseventoeightpeoplewithdifferentskills."

WhenAdhamwasstillinhighschool,thefirstgradeofthespaceinvaders,asteroidsanddefendersarepopulararcadegame.Hewillgotothemalltoplayforawhile.

"ThenmybrotherandIwenttotalktodadaboutbuying[thecomputer],sowecoulduseitatschool,"hesaid."Weusedittoplaygames.IwassofondofplayinggamessoIjustwriteitonmyown."

InDecember1990AdhamgraduatedfromUniversityofCaliforniaatLosAngeleswithadegreeincomputerscience,andhisparentsgavehimtenthousanddollarstogotoEurope.Buthelikesvideogames,andhewantstomakealiving.Soheusedthemoneytoopenavideogamecompany,siliconandneuralkeyisthepredecessorofchaosstudio.AndhisfriendsattheUniversityofCaliforniaatLosAngeles,MorhaimeMike,alsogotasumofmoneyfromtheirparents.Butatthattime,Morhaimehadajobinthewestoftheharddrive,andAdhamhadtopersuadehisfriendtoresign.

"Allenisagreatsale,"MorhaimetoldAdham."IamasmallpartofthedesignofthechipinWesternDigitalwork,hespentayeartoconvinceme."

Adhamsaid:

"myattitudeis-IamconvincedMikeandFrankwhen-weareyoung,wehavenodebtorfamily.(losing)it'sonlyamatteroftime.Wecantryitoutforayear.Ifitcandothatwouldbegreat.Ifitfails,it'salsoanexperienceoflife...Istillbelievethatattitudeiseverything."

PearceFrankisalsoafriendofAdham,butalsoagraduateofcollegestudents,hewasintheaerospaceenterpriseRockwelltogetagoodjob.PearceandMorhaimedonotknoweachother.Buttheirmutualfriendspersuadedthemtoformacompanytogether.Adhamhasbeenincontactwithothercompanies,andtheyhaveajobtodo.

"AllourachievementsaregoingtobeontheAdam,"Pearcesaidinaninterviewwithus.

Pearcehasdonealotofcoding,andhehadtospendtimeasareceptionistandwatchthedoorandinchargeofthe650squarefeetofoffice,pickupthephone.ButheeventuallygrewintooneofthemostsenioremployeesofBlizzard,responsibleforthedevelopmentofsomelargeprojects.

Morhaime,afterAdhamtookoveraschiefexecutiveofficer,alsotookalotofcredittoAdham.

"We'rethreeprogrammers,butAllenisavisionaryleader,chiefdesigner,andchiefoperatingofficer,"Morhaimesaid.

MorhaimeinAdhamleftasBlizzardCEO,hebegantosupportprogrammers,producer,isinformationtechnologyandoperationsoftheresponsibleperson.

"Ifweneedacomputer,I'llgotoCenterMicro,"hesaid."Wedon'thaveaITdepartment.Justme."

Theirjobistotransplantanexistinggametoanotherplatform.MorhaimerememberwhentheyputInterplayProductionsproducedbytheLordoftheringsPCgametotheAmigaplatform.Pearcealsohadtodrawaringimage,becausethepublisherdidnotgivethemtheseparts.

Throughthiswork,theycomeintocontactwiththeindustrypioneerFargoBrian,hisInterplay(oneoftheindustry'sleadingpublishers)isalsoheadquarteredinthevicinityofOrangeCounty,California.Dooutsourcingtotodayisalsoasmallindependentdeveloperstoenterthegameindustry'sway.Butitneedstoberacedalongthewaywithalotofsurvivaltothetemptationtocutcorners.

"OurfirstconsolegamewasRPMracing,andwestartedmakingandpublishingthisprojectinthesameyear,"Morhaimesaid."WeputitontheshelfatChristmastime.ItwasalsopublishedbyInterplay.Itisasequelintheyearsaftertherockracing.That'sabettergame."

RPMracingtobringthecompany40000revenue,appearedinthesuperNintendogamemachine.
