ThispoetryTheroadnottakenwaswrittenbyRobertLeeFrost,whowasperhapsthemostbelovedpoetandthemostsuccessfulAmericanpoetwidelyacceptedallovertheworldinthe20thcentury.Frostalwayswroteinasimpleformwithprofoundideas.Mostofhispoemsareshotanddirectontheinformationallevel,withsimplediction.However,itwouldbeamistaketoimaginethatFrostiseasytounderstandjustbecauseheiseasytoread.Asamatteroffact,hispoemswereverycarefullyconstructed;

theprofoundideasareoftendeliveredundertheplainlanguageandsimpleform.Thispoemisaverytypicalone,whichcancausepeopletothinkaboutmanythingsinlife.

Fromthispoetry,IcannotonlyappreciateitsbeautyaspoetrybutalsolearnLifephilosophy,thereforeIlikeitverymuch!

Firstofall,Iwanttoanalyzebeautyinformofthispoetry.Therearefourstanzastogetherandfivelinesineachstanza.Itistraditionaliambictetrameterandthereareeightsyllablesineachline.

Secondly,Iwanttoanalyzeanalyzesoundofthispoetry.Therhymeschemeis“abba”andinconversationalrhythm.Fromthispoint,wecanseehisexcellentskillofwriting.

Thirdly,Iwanttoanalyzeanalyzeartisticconceptionofthispoetry.Beforethat,Imustmakeasummaryofit.Thespeakerstandsinthewoods,consideringaforkintheroad.Bothwaysareequallywornandequallyoverlaidwithun-troddenleaves.Thespeakerchoosesone,tellinghimselfthathewilltaketheotheranotherday.Yetheknowsitisunlikelythathewillhavetheopportunitytodoso.Andheadmitsthatsomedayinthefuturehewillrecreatethescenewithaslighttwist:

Thepoembeginsasifthepoetwaswalkinginawoodinlateautumnataforkintheroad.Whywasitautumn?

Inmyopinion,inthisseasonpeoplewillfeelsadoflifeandwearetendtoconsiderabouttherealmeaningoflife,nomatterinthepass,onthismomentorinthefuture.So,thetimealsoplaysaveryimportantroleinexpressinghiscentretheme.Itseemsthathewaschoosingwhichroadheshouldfollow.Actually,itimpliestheimportantdecisionswhichonemustmakeinlife.Onemustgiveuponedesirablethinginordertopossestheother.

Inthenextstanza,afterthejudgmentandhesitation,thepoetmadeuphismindtotaketheroadwhichwasgrassyandwantswear.WhenIgetsomeinformationofhiswholelife,IBelievethatitwasthesymbolofpoet’schoiceofasolitary——takinguppoetrywritingashisprofession.

Then,inthethirdstanza,ashistworoadswereequallypretty,hefeltpitifulforabandoningtheotherassoonashemadethechoice.Heknewthathispromiseof“nextchoice”willbenothingthananemptypromise.Italwayshappensinourreallife.Oncewehavemadeachoiceatacrucialpoint,wecanneverreturnbackaseverythingischanging.Frommyviewpoint,weshouldbecautiouswhenwearriveatthatpoint.

Last,thepoetwasimagingmanyyearslaterwhenheisrecallingthechoicehemadetoday,hewouldrespondwithnothingelsebutasigh.Thechoicewhichyoumadebeforewillhaveagreatinfluenceonyourlifeinthefuture.Inone’swholelife,therearemaybethreeorfourkeymomentsthatcandecidefuture.So,everyoneshallmakethebestchoiceinordertohaveabrightfuture.

RobertFrostisamasteratpullingathreadoutofwhatlookslikequiteasimpletheme.Thispoem,asmanyofhispoems,beginswiththeobservationofnature.Bytheend,allthesimplewordscondenseintoaserious,philosophicalproproposition:

Whenanyoneinlifeisconfrontedwithmakingachoice,inordertopossesssomethingworthwhile,hehastogiveupsomethingwhichseemsaslovelyandvaluableasthechosenone.Then,whateverfollows,hemustaccepttheconsequenceofhischoice.Itisimpossibleforhimtoreturnbacktothebeginningandhaveanotherchancetochoosedifferently.

Thisisalsoasymbolicpoem.The“yellowwood”maysymbolizessophisticatedsociety,inwhichmostpeoplearelikelytofollowaprofitablebuteasierway;

each“road”symbolizesapossibilityinlife;

the“traveler”symbolizeseveryindividualinthehumanworld;

the“grassyandwantedwear”roadsymbolizesasolitarylifestyle;

while“thewayleadstoway”symbolizesthecomplicatedcircumstancesofhumanworld.

Itissaidthatthefunctionofpoetryisentertainmentaswellaseducation,andofcourseIcanlearnalessonfromthispoem.Thelastsentence“Andthathasmadeallthedifference”revileitstheme,whichisthechoicewemadebefore,epicallyatthekeymoment,willdecideourfuturelife.EventhoughIaminmyearlytwentieth,Icanstillrealizetheimportanceofmakingchoice,whichIhavetoadmitthatIamnotgoodatit.

Inmymind,family、friendshipandloveplayveryimportantrolesinourwholelife,sowearenotabletolivewithoutofthem.

Intermsoffamily,whenwearechildrenofourparents,choiceisimportantforus.What’sthereason?

Let’sthinkaboutitcarefully,touniversitystudents,wearenowadultsandwewillenterintothesocietyandtakeupourresponsibilitytosupportfamilysoon.Ourparentsaregettingolderandolder,sowehavetotryourbesttoletthemliveahappylife.However,itoftenhappensthatwespentallourtimeinearningmoneyratherthanaccompanyingourpatens.Manypeoplebelievethatonlyiftheyhaveenoughmoneytheycanliveasweetlife.However,theydon’tnoticethatthereissomethingthatcan’tbeboughtbymoney.Actually,moneyisimportanttoeveryone,whichisthebasicinsuranceofnormallife.What’smoreimportanttousisourfamilymember.Weshouldcareaboutthemwhenwehavesparetime.Forexample,ourparentswillleaveussomeday,ifwearekeepingonworkingandignorethem,maybewewillregretwhenweearnenoughmoneybuttheyarenotwithusanymore.So,wemustmakechoiceverycarefullytowardourfamilymembers.Onlyifwestaytogethercanweovercomeanyobstaclesfinally.Nomatterhowbusyweare,weshouldsparesometimetoaccompanyourfamilies,whichisthebestchoiceIbelieve!

Intermsoffriendship,wewillcomeacrosssomeproblemswithfriends,eventhebestfriend.Differentpeoplehavedifferentpersonalities、habits、preferencesandattitudestowardthing,ifwewanttogetalongwithothers,wehavetoconsideraboutotherpeople’sthoughts.Therefore,wehavetwochoiceswhenproblemsappear,oneofwhichistounderstandfriendsandhaveagoodcommunicationwitheachother,andtheotherchoiceistobreakupwithfriendsandlosethatfriendshipforever.Everyonehashisorhergoodpointsandweakpoints,asfriendsweshouldhelpthemtodobetter.Inordertokeepgoodrelationshipswehavetolearntoforgiveotherpeople.Infact,truefriendsareextremelyimportant.Afriendinneedisafriendindeed.Theyarealwaysreadytohelpusjustaswearereadytohelpthem.Theywillgiveusahandwithoutaskingforanyrequirement.So,ifwemakearightchoicewecanobtainpreviousfriendship.

Intermsoflove,makingchoiceseemsextremelyimportant.Everyonewantstofindasuitablepartnertogetmarried.Sowhenweareyoungwerarelyrealizetheimportanceofcherishingpeoplewhoareaccompanyingusnow.Wewanttofindamoreexcellentpeopletoestablishafamilyandwebelievethatheorshewillappearsoon.However,therealityiscruel.Aftermanyyears,wemayfindthatwemadeawrongchoice.Thepeoplewhostayedwithusbeforearejustthemostsuitablepartners.Itissaidthatthefirstloveismostpureandmostpeoplewon’tforgetitinthewholelife.Becauseofallkindsofreasonswebreakupwithourlovers.Maybewelovedeachotherverydeeply,butweseparatedduetootherreasons.Inmyopinion,weshouldsticktoourloveexceptwedon’tloveanymore.Ifwegivehimorherupwrongly,wewillregretintherestoflife.Fromthispoint,wemustmakeawisechoicewhenwemeetthisproblem.Inmyopinion,communicationisthemosteffectivetooltosolveproblemsbetweenlovers.Weshouldspeakitoutwhateverourfeelingisandthenwecanfindsatisfactorysolutions.Allinall,loveisakindofscaredthing.Weshallcherishitandtakeallfactorsintoconsideration.Nevermakeachoicehastily!

Apartfromthethreeemotions,careerissurelyalsoanimportantparttoourlife.Now,wearejuststudentsandstudyisourjob.Inourstudy,makingchoiceisalsoakindofartIthink.Weshallstudyhardsoastohaveagoodfuture,orwewillliveapoorlifemaybe.Formostcommonpeople“Knowledgeispower”istrue,sowemustfightingwhenweareyoung.Ofcourse,sometalentsareverygifted,andtheyhavespecialwaystoachievesuccessexceptfromreceivingnormaleducation.Thatisalsoakindofchoice.Inthefuture,wewillhaveourownjobs.Whatkindofjobissuitableforus?
