Evenamongitsrelatives,theIndiangiantsquirrelstandsoutwithitsbrightcolors,whichmakesonewonderwhyitsevolutionwouldselectfur.Thatwouldcallsomuchattentiontoitself.Afterall,theseforestsarealsohometopredatorssuchaslion-tailedmacaques,leopards,andcrestedserpenteagles—allofwhichhavebeenknowntohuntrodents.

Nooneknowsforsure,saysKoprowski,butthesquirrel’spurplepatternsmayserveasawaytohidetheanimalitself.Thisisbecausethebroadleafforeststhesesquirrelsinhabitcreateapatternofsunspotsandshadedareas—notunliketherodents’markings.
