ThisisthestoryofTrumanBurbank,a29yearoldinsurancesalesmanwholivesinacomfortabletowncalledSeahaven,whichislocatedonanisland,probablyoffthecoastofFlorida.Trumanisasincereandverynicepersonwhobeginstosuspectthatthereissomethingverystrangegoingonhislife,andlittlebylittle,helearnsthetruth:

Eversincehewasborn,Trumanhasbeenfilmedforalivetelevisionshowthatisbroadcast24hoursadaytotherestoftheworld,andthuseverythingandeveryonethathethinksheknowsisinfactpartofagianttelevisionstudiodesignedtorecordhislife.

Trumanbeginstodiscovertherealityofhisworldwhenthetelevisionproducersof"TheTrumanShow"begintomakesillymistakesthatgiveTrumananideaofwhatisreallyhappening.Afterlisteningtoaradiobroadcastthatseemstobebroadcastingeverythingheisdoing,andthenseeingworkerswholooklikethey'refixinghisownofficebuildingasifitwerepartofamovieset（whichitis!

）,TrumandecidesheneedstogetawayfromSeahaven.HetellshiswifeandbestfriendthathewantstogototheislandofFiji,wherethefamilyofagirlheoncelikedverymuchhadapparentlymoved.Thus,theproducersoftheshowmustthinkofeverypossiblewaytoconvinceTrumanthatitwouldreallybemuchbetterifhestayedhomeinSeahaven,withoutofcourse,admittingtohimthathis

wholeworldisactuallyagiant,fakeTVstudio.

Eventuallythough,Trumanbecomesdeterminedtoleavethisislandthathehasneverleftbefore,despitehishorriblefearofwater（whichbeganasachildwhenhethoughthesawhisfatherdrowninastorm）.Aseachwayofftheislandismysteriouslyblocked---fromcartobustoboat---Trumangrowsincreasinglyclosertofindingoutthetruenatureoftheworldaroundhim.
