13onthemorningofApril18th1906,thecityofSanFranciscowasshakenbyaterribleearthquake.Agreatpartofthecitywasdestroyedandalargenumberofbuildingswereburnt.Thenumberofpeoplewholosthomesreachedasmanyas250,000.About700peoplediedintheearthquakeandthefires.
AnotherearthquakeshookSanFranciscoonOctober17th,1989.ItwasAmerica'
ssecondstrongestearthquakeandabout100peoplewerekilled.Ithappenedintheeveningaspeopleweretravellinghome.Awideandbusyroadwhichwasbuiltlikeabridgeoveranotherroadfellontotheonebelow.Manypeoplewerekilledintheircars,butafewluckyoneswerenothurt.
Luckilythe1989earthquakedidnothappeninthecentreoftownbutabout50kilometresaway.Inonepartofthetownagreatmanybuildingsweredestroyed.Thesebuildingswereover50yearsold,sotheywerenotstrongenough.Therewerealotoffiresalloverthecity.Theelectricitywascutoffforseveraldaystoo.
Whydoearthquakeshappen?
Scientistsexplainthattheoutsideoftheearthismadeofanumberofdifferentplates(板块).AtSanFranciscothePacificplatewhichismovingtowardsthenorthwestmeetstheNorthAmericanplate.ThePacificplateismovingveryslowly—at5.3centimetresayear.Sometimesthesetwoplatesstopanddonotmoveforyears.Thensuddenly,theyjumpandanearthquakeisfelt.Asaresultofthemovementoftheseplates,westAmericaneartheseahasalwaysbeenabadplaceforearthquakes.Whenthe1906earthquakehappened,thePacificplatejumped5-6metrestothenorth.
ScientistsareafraidthatonedayanevenbiggerearthquakewillhittheareaaroundSanFrancisco.Theycallit“TheBigOne”.However,peopletodayarestillbuildingmorehouses.ThepopulationinandaroundSanFranciscoisnowtentimesmorethanitwasin1906.Thismeansthatifthereisanotherbigearthquake,agreatmanyhousesandbuildingswillbedestroyed.
