ThomasJeffersondidnotlikewhatBuffonhadsaidaboutthenaturalwondersoftheNewWorld.ItseemedtoJeffersonthatBuffonhadspokenofnaturalwondersinAmericaasiftheywereunimportant.

ThistroubledThomasJefferson.Hewasanaturalist,aswellasafarmer,inventor,historian,writerandpolitician.HehadseenthenaturalwondersofEurope.Tohim,theywerenomoreimportantthanthoseoftheNewWorld.

In1788,ThomasJeffersonwroteabouthishomestate,Virginia.Whilewriting,hethoughtofitsnaturalbeautyandthenofthewordsofBuffon.Atthatmoment,Jeffersoncreatedanewword-belittle.Hesaid,“BuffonbelievesthatnaturebelittlesherproductionsonthissideoftheAtlantic.”

NoahWebster,theAmericanwordexpert,likedthisword.HeputitinhisEnglishlanguagedictionaryin1806,“Belittle-tomakesomebodyorsomethingsmall,unimportant.”

AmericanshadalreadyacceptedJefferson’swordandstartedtouseit.In1797,theIndependentChroniclenewspaperusedthewordtodescribeapoliticianthepapersupported.“Heisanhonorableman,”thepaperwrote,“solettheoppositiontrytobelittlehimasmuchastheyplease.

In1872,afamousAmericanwordexpertdecidedthatthetimehadcometokillthisword.Hesaid,“‘Belittle’hasnochanceofbecomingEnglish.AndasmorecriticalwritersofAmerica,likethoseofBritain,feelnoneedofit,thesooneritisforgotten,thebetter.”Thisexpertfailedtokilltheword.Today,“belittle”isusedwheretheEnglishlanguageisspoken.
