”FrankPisanoscreamedoverthemicrophonetotheaircontroltowerattheairport．Oneofthetwoenginesonhisplanehadfailed，andhewasnowgoingdowntowardsoneofthebusiesthighwaysinAmerica—Interstate405，justsouthofLosAngeles—andtherewasnostoppingit．
Drivingsouthonthe405，neartheairport’Srunway，wasJohnMeffert，afiredepartmentcaptain．Hewasheadinghomefromhisshiftwhensuddenlyalow—flyingplanecaughthiseye．Afterhetookasecondglance，athoughtcrossedhismind：
“Thisplane’sgoingtohitme．”
Hewasright．Theplaneslammedintotheroad，poppedupafewfeet，andthenclippedthefrontofMeffert’scar．Itfinallystoppedafterhittingthedivider（隔栏）．Meffertpulledover．Hewasunhurt，andhiscarhadreceivedonlyalargescratch，soheturnedhisattentiontotheplane．Herantowardsthesmoke，andthenhesawFrank’swife，JananPisano，popherheaduponthepassengerside．
BythetimeMeffertreachedtheaircraft，partofitwasonfireandJanan，whowascoveredinblood，wasonthewingtryingtopullherhusbandfromthewreck．Meffert，afraidtheplanewouldexplode，guidedhertosafetybehindit．Then，heranbackforFrank，whohadbeenknockedoutbytheinitialcrash，lyingacrossbothseats．
Meffertcarefullypositionedhimselfunderthepilot’sarmsandliftedhimfromthecockpit．Thenhedraggedthepilotoffthewingandcarriedhimtosafety，wheretheycouldseetheplaneinflames．
ThePisanosspentthreeweeksinthehospital．Remarkably，Meffert’scarwastheonlyonehitbytheplane．HadMeffertbeenasecondortwofaster，Franksaid，theleftpropeller（螺旋桨））wouldhaverippedthetopoffhiscarandkilledhim．

Theassociationaskedcityhallforafour-waystopattheintersection，butitdidn’tmeetthestandards．Theneighborhoodassociationwouldsupplythepaintandencouragethecommunitytocomeupwithadesignfortheintersection，likelythroughacontestorsocialmedia．“Ithinkit’simportantthatitcomesfromthecommunity，thatit’snotforcedonthemfromoutside，”headded．
Citytrafficandroadsofficialswouldhavefinalsayoverthedesign．
“Asyouapproachit，you’regoingtoslowdown，”hesaid．
Thegroupwouldusewater-basedpaintsthatwouldfadewithinayear，Burmansaid，allowingthecityandthegrouptoassessthepainting’simpactafterayear，hesaid．Hewishesthecommunitytogettogethertopaintanewdesigneveryyear．
Citycouncilorswereclearlyinterested，andapprovedaproposalbyDanGlenn-Grahamtohavecitystaffstudytheideaandreportbacktocouncilaboutitsfeasibility（可行性）onAug．11．Thegrouphopestopainttheintersectionnextspring．
