WegotMayday!

”FrankPisanoscreamedoverthemicrophonetotheaircontroltowerattheairport.Oneofthetwoenginesonhisplanehadfailed,andhewasnowgoingdowntowardsoneofthebusiesthighwaysinAmerica—Interstate405,justsouthofLosAngeles—andtherewasnostoppingit.

Drivingsouthonthe405,neartheairport’Srunway,wasJohnMeffert,afiredepartmentcaptain.Hewasheadinghomefromhisshiftwhensuddenlyalow—flyingplanecaughthiseye.Afterhetookasecondglance,athoughtcrossedhismind:

“Thisplane’sgoingtohitme.”

Hewasright.Theplaneslammedintotheroad,poppedupafewfeet,andthenclippedthefrontofMeffert’scar.Itfinallystoppedafterhittingthedivider(隔栏).Meffertpulledover.Hewasunhurt,andhiscarhadreceivedonlyalargescratch,soheturnedhisattentiontotheplane.Herantowardsthesmoke,andthenhesawFrank’swife,JananPisano,popherheaduponthepassengerside.

BythetimeMeffertreachedtheaircraft,partofitwasonfireandJanan,whowascoveredinblood,wasonthewingtryingtopullherhusbandfromthewreck.Meffert,afraidtheplanewouldexplode,guidedhertosafetybehindit.Then,heranbackforFrank,whohadbeenknockedoutbytheinitialcrash,lyingacrossbothseats.

Meffertcarefullypositionedhimselfunderthepilot’sarmsandliftedhimfromthecockpit.Thenhedraggedthepilotoffthewingandcarriedhimtosafety,wheretheycouldseetheplaneinflames.

ThePisanosspentthreeweeksinthehospital.Remarkably,Meffert’scarwastheonlyonehitbytheplane.HadMeffertbeenasecondortwofaster,Franksaid,theleftpropeller(螺旋桨))wouldhaverippedthetopoffhiscarandkilledhim.

Theassociationaskedcityhallforafour-waystopattheintersection,butitdidn’tmeetthestandards.Theneighborhoodassociationwouldsupplythepaintandencouragethecommunitytocomeupwithadesignfortheintersection,likelythroughacontestorsocialmedia.“Ithinkit’simportantthatitcomesfromthecommunity,thatit’snotforcedonthemfromoutside,”headded.

Citytrafficandroadsofficialswouldhavefinalsayoverthedesign.

“Asyouapproachit,you’regoingtoslowdown,”hesaid.

Thegroupwouldusewater-basedpaintsthatwouldfadewithinayear,Burmansaid,allowingthecityandthegrouptoassessthepainting’simpactafterayear,hesaid.Hewishesthecommunitytogettogethertopaintanewdesigneveryyear.
