SOMEinventions,likesomespecies,seemtomakeperiodicleapsinprogress.Thecarisoneofthem.Twenty-fiveyearselapsedbetweenKarlBenzbeginningsmall-scaleproductionofhisoriginalMotorwagenandthebreakthrough,byHenryFordandhisengineersin1913,thatturnedthecarintotheubiquitous,mass-marketitemthathasdefinedthemodernurbanlandscape.ByputtingproductionoftheModelTonmovingassemblylinessetintothefloorofhisfactoryinDetroit,Forddrasticallycutthetimeneededtobuildit,andhenceitscost.Thusbeganarevolutioninpersonalmobility.Almostabillioncarsnowrollalongtheworld’shighways.
