3.ModuleObjectives
Theaimofthismoduleistoprovideadetailedcoverageofthenatureanddeterminantsofthepatternofworldtradeandfinancial,capitalandlabourflows.Themodulealsoaimstoprovidestudentswithacriticalappreciationofwhyconflictsarisebetweennationsduetointernationaleconomicactivityandwhatpolicyoptionsaremostappropriateforcountriesbothindividuallyandcooperativelytoadopt. Throughoutthemoduleemphasiswillbeplacedupontheroleoftheoryinenhancingunderstandingofthekeyissuesininternationaleconomicrelations.

6.TeachingandLearningStrategies
Thismodulewillbedeliveredbyacombinationoflecturesandseminars.Lectureswillbedesignedtoprovideessentialinformationandintroducestudentstothebasictoolsofanalysis,includingsomebasicpracticeinapplyingthetechniques.Weeklyseminarswillbebasedaroundstudyingkeypapersinthediscipline,casestudiesandsomestructuredquestionsandproblemsets.Thisisintendedtodevelopnotonlyunderstandingofthetopic,butalsothecriticalevaluationskillsofstudents.Thecontinuouscourseworkassessmentregimeisdesignedtoprovidestudentswithregularreinforcementoflearninginkeytopicsaswellasrapiddiagnosticfeedbackonhowtheyareprogressingwiththeirstudies.Thecourseworkessayisdesignedtodevelopskillsofresearch,criticalappraisal,writingandproblemsolving.
Attendanceatlecturesandtutorialsiscompulsory.YouhavebeenallocatedtoatutorialgroupbythenewORBITtimetablingsystemandyoushouldbeabletoviewdetailsviaSpider.Otherwiseaskme.Timeandvenueoflecturesisalsoinyourelectronictimetable.
Modulematerials,includinglecturenotes,lectureslidesandtutorialquestionsheetswillbemadeavailableonVITALafewdaysinadvanceoftherelevantclass.Throughoutthecourse,somehandoutswillbeissuedofkeyarticlesandcasestudieswherethesearenoteasilyobtainableviatheinternet.
7.Assessment
Thiscourseisassessedbycontinuousassessmentcoursework,whichwillmakeup25%ofthemodulegrade,acourseworkessaywhichwillmakeup35%ofthemodulegradeandastandard2hourunseenexamination,whichwillmakeup40%ofthemodulegrade.
Exam
Theexaminationwillbeclosedbookandlast2hours.Itwillconsistof10multiplechoicequestions,eachworthtwomarks,andachoiceoftwoessaysfromfive,eachworth40marks.AspecimenexamwillbeplacedonVITAL.Pleasenotethattheformatoftheexam,andthesyllabus,differthisyeartothatinpreviousyears.Forthatreason,previousyears’exampaperswillnotbepostedonVITAL.
Continuousassessmentcourseworktests
Therewillbe10weeklyon-linemultiplechoicequizzes,whichareaccessedthroughtheMyEconLabportal.ApracticequizispermanentlyavailableinMyEconLabtogiveyoupracticebeforeyoutakeaquizforreal.AbriefguidetoMyEconLabappearsattheendofthisdocumentasAppendixB.Thescheduleoftopicswillrunimmediatelyaftertherelevantlectureandtutorial(seelectureandtutorialscheduledlaterinthisguide).Eachtestwillbeopenfor24hoursfrom16.00onMondayto16.00onTuesday.Youcanaccessthetestatanytimeinthatwindow.Therewillbefivequestionspertestandyouwillhaveamaximumof30minutestocompletethetest.Thetestsarecompletelyopenbook.FeedbackonyourscorewillbereleasedveryshortlyafterthetesthasclosedonThursdays.Inordernottooverburdenyou,eachtestwillbebasedononeparticularchapterfromGerber,eventhoughtheremaybemorethanonechapterassignedtoaparticularlecturetopic.Thescheduleisasfollows:
