TERMSANDABBREVIATIONS

ThepurposeoftheseGuidelinesistoprovideguidanceontheuseofappropriatenavigation-relatedterminologyandabbreviationsintendedforpresentationonshipbornenavigationaldisplays.Thesearebasedontermsandabbreviationsusedinexistingnavigationreferences.

Theseguidelinesareissuedtoensurethatthetermsandabbreviationsusedforthedisplayofnavigation-relatedinformationonallshipbornenavigationequipmentandsystemsareconsistentanduniform.

TheseGuidelinesapplytoallshipbornenavigationalsystemsandequipmentincluding,radar,ECDIS;

AIS,INSandIBS.Whennavigation-relatedinformationisdisplayedastext,thestandardtermsorabbreviationslistedintheAppendixshouldbeused,insteadofusingtermsandabbreviationswhicharecurrentlycontainedinexistingperformancestandards.

Whereastandardtermandabbreviationisnotavailable,an-othertermorabbreviationmaybeused.ThistermorabbreviationshouldnotconflictwiththestandardtermsorabbreviationslistedintheAppendixandprovideaclearmeaning.Standardmarineterminologyshouldbeusedforthispurpose.Whenthemeaningisnotclearfromitscontext,thetermshouldnotbeabbreviated.

Unlessotherwisespecified,standardtermsshouldbeshowninlowercasewhileabbreviationsshouldbepresentedusingup-percase.
