“Prettycool,”ScottAdamssaidashestudiedtheadcarefully.

Scottsatontheporchstepsinfrontofhishouse,readingcomicbookswithhisfriends,GlenBrody.

“Checkthisout!

”ScotthandedGlenthead.Itshowedapictureofamadscientist.Hewaspeeringintoagianttankofwaterfullofstrange-lookingcreatures.Creatureswascalledaquaapes.”

“‘Aquaapes?

’”Glenlaughed.“Theylookmorelikelizardstome.”

“Yougrow’em.That’swhat’ssocool.Theycomefrommagiccrystals.See?

Scottpointedtothemagiccrystalsinthemadscientist’shand.

“Oh,right.”Glenrolledhiseyes.“Swimmingmonkeysfrommagiccrystals.Idon’tthinkso.”

“Yea,well,theysayit’sguaranteed.Oryougetyourmoneyback,”Scottsaid.”Theywouldn’tsaythatifitdidn’twork.

“Maybe.”Glendidn’tsoundconvinced.

“Youwanttosendawayforthem?

”Scottasked.

“Noway,”Glenreplied.

“Comeon.Whathavewegottolose?

“Threedollarsandninety-fivecents,”Glenanswered.“Pluspostageandhandling.”

ScottknewitwouldbehardtoconvinceGlentospendthemoney—buthehadto.Yousee,almostallthekidsinschoolcouldtellcreepystories—storiesabouttotallyweirdthingsthathappenedtothem.LikebeingchasedbyghostsintheFearStreetCemetery.Orgettingattackedbyhalf-human,half-animalcreaturesintheFearStreetWoods.

ButScottdidn’thaveasinglestorytotell.Notone.Which,whenyouthinkofit,wastheweirdestthingofall.BecauseeveryoneknewthatifyoulivednearFearStreet,scarythingshappenedtoyou.Period.

ButScotthadlivednearFearStreethisentirelife.Andhedidn’thaveasinglecreepystorytotell.

Until--maybenow.IfhecouldjustconvinceGlentosendawayforthemagiccrystals….

“Suchasmallpricetopayfor‘thepowertocreatelife.’?

”Scottrepeatedthead’spromiseinhisbestmadscientistvoice.Hewishedtolookmorelikeamadscientist.Itwashardtobereallyscarywithblondhair,blueeyes,andfreckles.

“Forgetit,”Glendeclared.“Firstofall,I’veneverseenaswimmingmonkey.Noteveninthezoo.Andsecondofall,it’simpossibletogrowalivinganimalfroma‘magiccrystal.’Incasenobodytoldyouthis,youneedamommymonkeyandadaddymonkeytogetababymonkey.”

“They’renotmonkeys!

”Scottprotested.“They’re…”Scottstruggledtocomeupwithananswer.“They’re…somethingelse.”

“Yeah,aquaapes.Aquaapes.”Glenpointedtothewords.“Samethingasswimmingmonkeys.”

“Well,I’mgettingthem,”Scottinsisted,grabbingthecomicbookoutofGlen’shands.

Soget’em,”Glenanswered.Heshovedhiscurlybrownhairoffhisforehead.

“Iwill,”Scottassureshim.“Assoonasyoulendmesomemoney.”

“I’mnotpayingforsomestupidwatermonkeys.You’retheonewhowantsthem.”

“I’mnotaskingyoutopayforthem.Justthepostageandthehandling,”Scottsaid.“AndIwouldn’tevenaskyouforthat.ButyoudideatuphalfofmyallowanceyesterdayattheIceCreamCastle.Remember—yoursundaetocelebratethelastdayofsummervacation?

“Okay,okay,”Glensaid.Thenhestuckhisfingersintohismouthandmadegaggingsounds.“I’llgiveitbacktoyou.”

“Youaresogross!

”ScottslidawayfromGlenasfastashecould.ThelasttimeGlenpulledthisstuntherallydidthrowup.“Justforgetit,”Scottsaidmiserably.

“Oh,allright,”Glengroaned.“I’llpayforhalf.”

Glenreachedintohispocketandpulledouthismoney.HecountedoutthreedollarsandshoveditintoScott’shand.“Goahead.Ordertheswimmingmonkeys.Butwhenthemagiccrystalsdon’tcometolife,I’mnotwaitingforthisstupidcompanytosendmymoneyback.You’regonnagiveittome.”

“Fine,”Scottagreed.“Butwhatiftheydocometolife?

“ThenI’llbeamonkey’suncle.”Glencrackedhimselfup.”Getit?

“Ha,ha,”Scottsaid,notatallamusedbyGlen’slamejoke.“You’llsee.”

Inafewweeks,I’llfinallyhaveacoolstorytotellatschool,Scottthought.Andmaybeevenscary,too.

Scotthadnoideajusthowscaryhisstorywouldbe.

“No!

”Scottshouted.“No!

Scottcouldn’tbelievehisbadluck.Itwasthefirstdayinthreeweeksthathehadn’tbeenhometowaitforthemailman.Andsureenough,thatwasthedayhispackagearrived.

Butthatwasn’tthebadpart.ThebadpartwasthatthemailmanhadjusthandedoverScott’spackagetoScott’soldersister,Kelly.

Kellythoughtshewasthecoolestthingonearth.SheconstantlyremindedScottshewasalmostthirteen.Almostarealteenager.Notababylike—Scott—eventhoughScottwasonlyayearyounger.

ScottandGlenchasedKellyaroundthekitchentable.

“Wecandothistheeasyway,orwecandoitthehardway,”Scottsaid,closinginonKelly.

Heshovedhisopenhandout.“Nowgiveittome.”Butheknewshewouldn’t.Kellyneverdidanythingtheeasyway.

“Howdoyouevenknowthispackageisforyou?

”sheteased.

Scottinchedcloserandcloser.“Becausemynameisonit”hesaidasherippedthepackagefromhergrip.

“Jerk!

”shehuffed,punchinghiminthearm.

Scottignoredher.Hecouldn’twaittoopenthepackage.Theminutethebrownwrappingwasoff,Glenheldoutanopenpalm.

“What?

”Scottsaid,staringdownatit.

“Youmightaswelljustgivememythreebucksbackrightnow,”Glenanswered.“Itoldyouitwasgonnabeatotalrip-off.”

Scotthatedtoadmitit,butGlenwasprobablyright.Theboxdidn’tlookanythingliketheadinthecomicbook.

Therewasnopictureofamadscientist.

Nomagiccrystalsinhishand.Onlylotsofgoofy-lookingcreatures.Withantennaepoppingupfromtheirheads.Andpinkandbluebowstiedtothem.Theyswamaroundinafishbowl,wearingsillygrins.

“Maybetheysentthewrongbox,”Scottsuggested,turningitaroundinhishands.

Kellysnatcheditfromhim.“Ooooh,‘thepowertocreatelife,’?

”Shereadfromthebox.

“Givethatbacktome,”Scottdemanded.

ButKellyjustlaughed.“Youtwosuchlosers.What’sthematter?

Can’tfindanyrealfriendstoplaywithsoyouhavetogrowsome?

Thenshetossedtheboxonthetableandstrolledoutofthekitchen.

“Soarewegoingtomakethesethings,orwhat?

”Glenasked,openingbox.

“Iguess.”ScottsatdownatthekitchentableandwatchedGlenslideasmallroundtankfromthebox.

Anotherdisappointment.Thetankwasnowherenearasbigastheonethemadscientistheldinthead.Itwastoosmallforevenagoldfish.Anditwasmadeofplastic.

Theonlycoolthingaboutitwasthatithadalidwithalightyoucouldturnonandoff.Andthebottomofthetanklookedlikethesurfaceofthemoon—withabigcraterinthecenterofit.

Next,Glenpulledoutsomeaquaapefoodandthepackageofmagiccrystals.Itwassmallerthanapackageofsugar.

Thisisgoingtobeatotalfailure,Scottthoughttohimself.Thenheasked,“Howbigaretheapethingssupposedtogetanyway?

Glenflippedthroughtheinstructions.“Itsaysthathappy,healthyadultaquaapescangrowtohalfaninchlong.”

“Ahalfaninch?

”Scottmoaned.“Theonesintheadweremonsters”

“Theinstructionssayweneeddistilledwater,”Glensaid,continuingtoread.“Gotany?

“No.”Scottanswered.“AndIamnotgoingtospendanymoremoneytobuysomeeither.”

“Thenyouarenottogrowanyaquaapes,”Glenninformedhim.“Becauseitsaysrightherethatyouhavetousedistilledwaster.”

“Ihaveabetteridea,”Scottsaid,suddenlyfeelingmoreenthusiastic.“Let’sgodowntotheFearStreetWoodsandscoopsomewaterfromthelake.”

“Areyoucrazy?

”Glenexclaimed.“Haven’tyouheardaboutthegrossthingsthatliveintheFearLake?

”Iknowaguywhodranksomeofthelakewateronadare—hehadtogointhehospital.Whoknowswhatwe’llgetifweusethatwater?

“Exactly!

”Scottsmiledhismadscientistsmile.“Whoknowswhatwe’llget!

ThemomentScottcametotheendofParkDrive,hidheartstartedtobeatalittlefaster.Withjustonestephewouldcrosstheimaginarysafetylineintodangerousterritory—FearStreet.

Eveninthemiddleoftheday,FearStreetwasdarkandscary.Enormousoldtreeslinedbothsidesofthestreet.Andasthesunlighttriedtosneakbetweensomeofthehugebranches,itcaststrangeshadowsonthegroundbelow.Shadowsthatlookedliketheycouldswallowyouup.

OnceyouhavewalkeddownFearStreet,Scottthought,youknowallthecreepystoriesyou’veheardaboutitaretrue.

“Theadventureisabouttobegin!

”ScottannouncedtoGlen.HetookadeepbreathandstartedtowardtheFearStreetWoods.TheywerecreepierthanFearStreet.Scarier,too.

Thetreesinthewoodsgrewthickandgnarled—withblacktwistedbranchesthatseemedtoreachout.Reachouttostruggleyou.

Glenhesitated.

“Well,areyoucoming,orwhat?

“Thisisareallystupididea,”Glenreplied.

“Itisnot.You’rejustchicken,”Scotttaunted.ThenhestartedflappinghisarmsandsquawkingatGlen.“Bawk,bawk,bawk!

“Iamnotachicken,”Gleninsisted.

“Thencomeon.”

“There.”Glensteppedintothewoods.“Areyouhappynow?

“Thisway.”Scottpointedtothepathahead.ThepaththatleddirectlytoFearLake.“We’dbetterhurry.Thesewoodsgetrealdark,realearly.”

Astheyfollowedthetrail,Scottnoticedhowquietthewoodswere.Hecouldn’thearanybirdschirpingorbugshumming.Oranysoundoflifeatall.Creepy.Reallycreepy.

Scottkepthiseyesgluedtothetrail.Hehadtomakesuretheystayedontherightpath.NowaywashegettinglostintheFearStreetWoods.

“Canwehurryitup?

”Glenasked.HefollowedScottsocloselythathesteppedonthebackofoneofhissneakers.

“Doyouhavetowalkontopofme?

”Scottcomplained,yankinghissneakerbackup.“Thela
