Thereissomuchmoremeaningtoamessagethanwhatexistsinthespokenorwrittenwords.Forexample,ifapersonsays,“youknow,Barbara,Ireallylikeyou,”ithasdifferentmeaningsdependingonwhetheritissaidbymanorawoman,inanofficeorabar.Context,thetoneofvoice,thestressputoncertainwords,aswellastheeyecontact,physicaldistance,andtherelationshipbetweenthespeakerandthelistenerareallfactorswhichgivemeaningtowhat’sbeingsaid.Sometimes,thesefactorscangeneratemuchmoremeaningthanthewordsthemselves.Ifafriendsaytome,“Gee,Ican’twaittoseetheresultoftheupcomingelection,”myinterpretationofthatmessagewillbebaseduponmyknowledgeofmyfriend’spoliticalviews,thesituationwiththecurrentcampaign,andmyabilitytounderstandthemeaningbehindthetoneofvoice.

Ourabilitytounderstandsuchcueisdevelopedwithoutusbeingawareofitthroughourprocessofsocialization,Ourinterpretationofthesecuesjustcomesnaturally.Everyculturehasitsownsetofculturecuesthateachmemberofthatcultureunderstands.It’scommonhowapersonfromcultureAandapersonfromcultureBinterprettheverysamewordsintotallydifferentways.Herearesomeexamples:

Thesestoriesprovidejustafewexamplesofhowlanguageskillsaresimplynotenoughtoachieveeffectivecommunicationinanotherculture.Togetthemostofyourinternationallearningexperience,focusongainingcross-culturalskillswillenableyoudothefollowing:

`learnfromyourculturaladaptationprocess;

`communicatemoreeffectively.
