In1989,TimBerners-Leewasa34-year-oldBritishphysicistworkingasasoftware（软件）engineeratCERN,theEuropeanOrganizationforNuclearResearchinSwitzerland.SinceCERNwasahugeorganizationwiththousandsofscientists,communicationbetweenthemwasbecomingincreasinglydifficult.

Hispapersuggestedaninformationsystem,whereapageononecomputercouldhavealinktoanotherpageonanothercomputer（connectedthroughtheInternet）,allowingscientiststoreadlotsofinformationquickly.However,Berners-Lee’sbosssaidthatitsoundedexcitingbutimpossible.

Eventhoughthereweremanydifficultiesandfewsupporters,Berners-LeewentontodeveloptheWorldWideWeb.HecameupwithideassuchasHyper-textTransferProtocol（超文本传输协议）toallowcomputerstotalktoeachother,Hyper-textMarkupLanguage（HTML）tocreatethepages,aservertoservethepages,andabrowser（浏览器）toseethem.
