FitTestingProcedures(Mandatory)

PartI.OSHA-AcceptedFitTestProtocols

A.FitTestingProcedures--GeneralRequirements

Theemployershallconductfittestingusingthefollowingprocedures.TherequirementsinthisappendixapplytoallOSHA-acceptedfittestmethods,bothQLFTandQNFT.

1.Thetestsubjectshallbeallowedtopickthemostacceptablerespiratorfromasufficientnumberofrespiratormodelsandsizessothattherespiratorisacceptableto,andcorrectlyfits,theuser.

2.Priortotheselectionprocess,thetestsubjectshallbeshownhowtoputonarespirator,howitshouldbepositionedontheface,howtosetstraptensionandhowtodetermineanacceptablefit.Amirrorshallbeavailabletoassistthesubjectinevaluatingthefitandpositioningoftherespirator.Thisinstructionmaynotconstitutethesubject'

sformaltrainingonrespiratoruse,becauseitisonlyareview.

3.Thetestsubjectshallbeinformedthathe/sheisbeingaskedtoselecttherespiratorthatprovidesthemostacceptablefit.Eachrespiratorrepresentsadifferentsizeandshape,andiffittedandusedproperly,willprovideadequateprotection.

4.Thetestsubjectshallbeinstructedtoholdeachchosenfacepieceuptothefaceandeliminatethosethatobviouslydonotgiveanacceptablefit.

5.Themoreacceptablefacepiecesarenotedincasetheoneselectedprovesunacceptable;

themostcomfortablemaskisdonnedandwornatleastfiveminutestoassesscomfort.AssistanceinassessingcomfortcanbegivenbydiscussingthepointsinthefollowingitemA.6.Ifthetestsubjectisnotfamiliarwithusingaparticularrespirator,thetestsubjectshallbedirectedtodonthemaskseveraltimesandtoadjustthestrapseachtimetobecomeadeptatsettingpropertensiononthestraps.

6.Assessmentofcomfortshallincludeareviewofthefollowingpointswiththetestsubjectandallowingthetestsubjectadequatetimetodeterminethecomfortoftherespirator:

(a)Positionofthemaskonthenose

(b)Roomforeyeprotection

(c)Roomtotalk

(d)Positionofmaskonfaceandcheeks

7.Thefollowingcriteriashallbeusedtohelpdeterminetheadequacyoftherespiratorfit:

(a)Chinproperlyplaced;

(b)Adequatestraptension,notoverlytightened;

(c)Fitacrossnosebridge;

(d)Respiratorofpropersizetospandistancefromnosetochin;

(e)Tendencyofrespiratortoslip;

(f)Self-observationinmirrortoevaluatefitandrespiratorposition.

8.Thetestsubjectshallconductausersealcheck,eitherthenegativeandpositivepressuresealchecksdescribedinAppendixB-1ofthissectionorthoserecommendedbytherespiratormanufacturerwhichprovideequivalentprotectiontotheproceduresinAppendixB-1.Beforeconductingthenegativeandpositivepressurechecks,thesubjectshallbetoldtoseatthemaskonthefacebymovingtheheadfromside-to-sideandupanddownslowlywhiletakinginafewslowdeepbreaths.Anotherfacepieceshallbeselectedandretestedifthetestsubjectfailstheusersealchecktests.

9.Thetestshallnotbeconductedifthereisanyhairgrowthbetweentheskinandthefacepiecesealingsurface,suchasstubblebeardgrowth,beard,mustacheorsideburnswhichcrosstherespiratorsealingsurface.Anytypeofapparelwhichinterfereswithasatisfactoryfitshallbealteredorremoved.

10.Ifatestsubjectexhibitsdifficultyinbreathingduringthetests,sheorheshallbereferredtoaphysicianorotherlicensedhealthcareprofessional,asappropriate,todeterminewhetherthetestsubjectcanweararespiratorwhileperformingherorhisduties.

11.Iftheemployeefindsthefitoftherespiratorunacceptable,thetestsubjectshallbegiventheopportunitytoselectadifferentrespiratorandtoberetested.

12.Exerciseregimen.Priortothecommencementofthefittest,thetestsubjectshallbegivenadescriptionofthefittestandthetestsubject'

sresponsibilitiesduringthetestprocedure.Thedescriptionoftheprocessshallincludeadescriptionofthetestexercisesthatthesubjectwillbeperforming.Therespiratortobetestedshallbewornforatleast5minutesbeforethestartofthefittest.

13.Thefittestshallbeperformedwhilethetestsubjectiswearinganyapplicablesafetyequipmentthatmaybewornduringactualrespiratorusewhichcouldinterferewithrespiratorfit.

14.TestExercises.

(a)Employersmustperformthefollowingtestexercisesforallfittestingmethodsprescribedinthisappendix,exceptfortheCNPquantitativefittestingprotocolandtheCNPREDONquantitativefittestingprotocol.Forthesetwoprotocols,employersmustensurethatthetestsubjects(i.e.,employees)performtheexerciseprocedurespecifiedinPartI.C.4(b)ofthisappendixfortheCNPquantitativefittestingprotocol,ortheexerciseproceduredescribedinPartI.C.5(b)ofthisappendixfortheCNPREDONquantitativefit-testingprotocol.Fortheremainingfittestingmethods,employersmustensurethatemployeesperformthetestexercisesintheappropriatetestenvironmentinthefollowingmanner:

(1)Normalbreathing.Inanormalstandingposition,withouttalking,thesubjectshallbreathenormally.

(2)Deepbreathing.Inanormalstandingposition,thesubjectshallbreatheslowlyanddeeply,takingcautionsoasnottohyperventilate.

(3)Turningheadsidetoside.Standinginplace,thesubjectshallslowlyturnhis/herheadfromsidetosidebetweentheextremepositionsoneachside.Theheadshallbeheldateachextrememomentarilysothesubjectcaninhaleateachside.

(4)Movingheadupanddown.Standinginplace,thesubjectshallslowlymovehis/herheadupanddown.Thesubjectshallbeinstructedtoinhaleintheupposition(i.e.,whenlookingtowardtheceiling).

(5)Talking.Thesubjectshalltalkoutloudslowlyandloudenoughsoastobeheardclearlybythetestconductor.ThesubjectcanreadfromapreparedtextsuchastheRainbowPassage,countbackwardfrom100,orreciteamemorizedpoemorsong.

RainbowPassage

Whenthesunlightstrikesraindropsintheair,theyactlikeaprismandformarainbow.Therainbowisadivisionofwhitelightintomanybeautifulcolors.Thesetaketheshapeofalongroundarch,withitspathhighabove,anditstwoendsapparentlybeyondthehorizon.Thereis,accordingtolegend,aboilingpotofgoldatoneend.Peoplelook,butnooneeverfindsit.Whenamanlooksforsomethingbeyondreach,hisfriendssayheislookingforthepotofgoldattheendoftherainbow.

(6)Grimace.Thetestsubjectshallgrimacebysmilingorfrowning.(ThisappliesonlytoQNFTtesting;

itisnotperformedforQLFT)

(7)Bendingover.Thetestsubjectshallbendatthewaistasifhe/sheweretotouchhis/hertoes.JogginginplaceshallbesubstitutedforthisexerciseinthosetestenvironmentssuchasshroudtypeQNFTorQLFTunitsthatdonotpermitbendingoveratthewaist.

(8)Normalbreathing.Sameasexercise

(1).

(b)Eachtestexerciseshallbeperformedforoneminuteexceptforthegrimaceexercisewhichshallbeperformedfor15seconds.Thetestsubjectshallbequestionedbythetestconductorregardingthecomfortoftherespiratoruponcompletionoftheprotocol.Ifithasbecomeunacceptable,anothermodelofrespiratorshallbetried.Therespiratorshallnotbeadjustedoncethefittestexercisesbegin.Anyadjustmentvoidsthetest,andthefittestmustberepeated.

B.QualitativeFitTest(QLFT)Protocols

1.General

(a)TheemployershallensurethatpersonsadministeringQLFTareabletopreparetestsolutions,calibrateequipmentandperformtestsproperly,recognizeinvalidtests,andensurethattestequipmentisinproperworkingorder.

(b)TheemployershallensurethatQLFTequipmentiskeptcleanandwellmaintainedsoastooperatewithintheparametersforwhichitwasdesigned.

2.IsoamylAcetateProtocol

Note:

Thisprotocolisnotappropriatetouseforthefittestingofparticulaterespirators.Ifusedtofittestparticulaterespirators,therespiratormustbeequippedwithanorganicvaporfilter.

(a)OdorThresholdScreening

Odorthresholdscreening,performedwithoutwearingarespirator,isintendedtodetermineiftheindividualtestedcandetecttheodorofisoamylacetateatlowlevels.

(1)Three1literglassjarswithmetallidsarerequired.

(2)Odor-freewater(e.g.,distilledorspringwater)atapproximately25deg.C(77deg.F)shallbeusedforthesolutions.

(3)Theisoamylacetate(IAA)(alsoknownatisopentylacetate)stocksolutionispreparedbyadding1mlofpureIAAto800mlofodor-freewaterina1literjar,closingthelidandshakingfor30seconds.Anewsolutionshallbepreparedatleastweekly.

(4)Thescreeningtestshallbeconductedinaroomseparatefromtheroomusedforactualfittesting.Thetworoomsshallbewell-ventilatedtopreventtheodorofIAAfrombecomingevidentinthegeneralroomairwheretestingtakesplace.

(5)Theodortestsolutionispreparedinasecondjarbyplacing0.4mlofthestocksolutioninto500mlofodor-freewaterusingacleandropperorpipette.Thesolutionshallbeshakenfor30secondsandallowedtostandfortwotothreeminutessothattheIAAconcen
