Deserttortoisesarealsoharmedbyseveraldiseasessuchastheupperrespiratorytractdiseaseoftenfoundinadoptedtortoises.Petownersreleasingsicktortoisesintothewildhasresultedindiseasesbeingspreadtowildtortoises.

Thedeserttortoisefeedsonadune(沙丘)primroseduringspring.Non-nativeSaharamustard(芥菜)seeninthebackgroundisaweedthatcompeteswiththenativeplantsforwaterandnutrients.Insomeareas,mustardgrowssodenselythatitisnearlyimpossiblefordeserttortoisestopassthrough.Vehicles,whichdonotstayonbuiltroadsanddonotgetwashedfrequently,contributetospreadingweeds.

Rubbish,suchasburstballoon,isadangertodeserttortoises.Theballooncanbemistakenforfoodbydeserttortoisesand,onceconsumed,mayremaininthestomachsandintestines(肠)givingthemafalsesenseoffullnessthatmaycausethemtostarve.
