  Butananalystwhostudiessuchgreatevents,ArchitectureandUrbanismProfessoratRiodeJaneiro'sFluminenseFederalUniversity,ChrisGaffney,believesthesefiguresareexaggerated."Idon'tthinkthatthey'veinvestedenoughmoneytocreatethosekindsofpermanentjobs.InthescaleoftheBrazilianeconomy,we'renotlookingatthatmuchmoneybeinginvested.It's30billiondollarsinvestedina$1trillioneconomy."

  Anotherexpert,LisaDelpyNeirottiofGeorgeWashingtonUniversity'sbusinessschoolintheUnitedStates,saystherealeconomicbenefitsofsucheventsarelesstangibleandmorelong-term."There'salotoftransferofknowledge,"shesaid."Peoplearelearningmoreabouthospitality.There'salsothebroadcastcenterwherethey'rebeingtrainedinhowtousetechnology.AndsoIthinkit'sinthemediasector,alotinthehospitalityindustryandalsoinlicensingandmerchandizing,retail."Shesaid."Yes,there'sbeenalotofmoneyspentherebutwehavetorealizethattheinfrastructurethatthey'vebuiltuparoundtheWorldCupissomethingthatwilllastanditstaysinthecountry."
