　　Dianawastheveryessenceofcompassion,ofduty,ofstyle,ofbeauty.Allovertheworldshewasasymbolofselflesshumanity.Allovertheworld,astandardbearerfortherightofthetrulydowntrodden,averyBritishgirlwhotranscendnationality,someonewithanaturalnobilitywhowasclassless.ThisisthetextofEarlSpencer'stributetohissisteratherfuneral.Thereissomeverydeep,powerfulandheartfeltsentiment.Wouldthatthoseatwhomitisaimedwouldtakeheed.Theversionspostedonseveralnewsserviceshadminorerrors.Thisispreciselyasitwasdeliverd.Istandbeforeyoutodaytherepresentativeofafamilyingrief,inacountryinmourningbeforeaworldinshock.WeareallunitednotonlyinourdesiretopayourrespectstoDianabutratherinourneedtodoso.Forsuchwasherextraordinaryappealthatthetensofmillionsofpeopletakingpartinthisserviceallovertheworldviatelevisionandradiowhoneveractuallymether,feelthatthey,too,lostsomeoneclosetothemintheearlyhoursofSundaymorning.ItisamoreremarkabletributetoDianathanIcaneverhopetoofferhertoday.Dianawastheveryessenceofcompassion,ofduty,ofstyle,ofbeauty.Allovertheworldshewasasymbolofselflesshumanity,astandard-bearerfortherightsofthetrulydowntrodden,averyBritishgirlwhotranscendednationality,someonewithanaturalnobilitywhowasclassless,whoprovedinthelastyearthatsheneedednoroyaltitletocontinuetogenerateherparticularbrandofmagic.Todayisourchancetosay"thankyou"forthewayyoubrightenedourlives,eventhoughGodgrantedyoubuthalfalife.Wewillallfeelcheated,always,thatyouweretakenfromussoyoungandyetwemustlearntobegratefulthatyoucamealongatall.Onlynowyouaregonedowetrulyappreciatewhatwearenowwithoutandwewantyoutoknowthatlifewithoutyouisvery,verydifficult.Wehavealldespairedatourlossoverthepastweekandonlythestrengthofthemessageyougaveusthroughyouryearsofgivinghasaffordedusthestrengthtomoveforward.Thereisatemptationtorushtocanonizeyourmemory.Thereisnoneedtodoso.Youstandtallenoughasahumanbeingofuniquequalitiesnottoneedtobeseenasasaint.Indeedtosanctifyyourmemorywouldbetomissoutontheverycoreofyourbeing,yourwonderfullymischievoussenseofhumorwiththelaughthatbentyoudouble,yourjoyforlifetransmittedwhereveryoutookyoursmile,andthesparkleinthoseunforgettableeyes,yourboundlessenergywhichyoucouldbarelycontain.Butyourgreatestgiftwasyourintuition,anditwasagiftyouusedwisely.Thisiswhatunderpinnedallyourwonderfulattributes.Andifwelooktoanalyzewhatitwasaboutyouthathadsuchawideappeal,wefinditinyourinstinctivefeelforwhatwasreallyimportantinallourlives.WithoutyourGod-givensensitivity,wewouldbeimmersedingreaterignoranceattheanguishofAIDSandHIVsufferers,theplightofthehomeless,theisolationoflepers,therandomdestructionoflandmines.Dianaexplainedtomeoncethatitwasherinnermostfeelingsofsufferingthatmadeitpossibleforhertoconnectwithherconstituencyoftherejected.Andherewecometoanothertruthabouther.Forallthestatus,theglamour,theapplause,Dianaremainedthroughoutaveryinsecurepersonatheart,almostchildlikeinherdesiretodogoodforotherssoshecouldreleaseherselffromdeepfeelingsofunworthinessofwhichhereatingdisordersweremerelyasymptom.Theworldsensedthispartofhercharacterandcherishedherforhervulnerability,whilstadmiringherforherhonesty.ThelasttimeIsawDianawasonJulythefirst,herbirthday,inLondon,whentypicallyshewasnottakingtimetocelebrateherspecialdaywithfriendsbutwasguestofhonoratafund-raisingcharityevening.Shesparkledofcourse,butIwouldrathercherishthedaysIspentwithherinMarchwhenshecametovisitmeandmychildreninourhomeinSouthAfrica.IamproudofthefactthatapartfromwhenshewasonpublicdisplaymeetingPresidentMandela,wemanagedtocontrivetostoptheever-presentpaparazzifromgettingasinglepictureofher.Thatmeantalottoher.TheseweredaysIwillalwaystreasure.Itwasasifwe'dbeentransportedbacktoourchildhood,whenwespentsuchanenormousamountoftimetogether,thetwoyoungestinthefamily.Fundamentallyshehadn'tchangedatallfromthebigsisterwhomotheredmeasababy,foughtwithmeatschoolandenduredthoselongtrainjourneysbetweenourparents'homeswithmeatweekends.Itisatributetoherlevel-headednessandstrengththatdespitethemostbizarrelifeimaginableafterherchildhood,sheremainedintact,truetoherself.Thereisnodoubtthatshewaslookingforanewdirectioninherlifeatthistime.ShetalkedendlesslyofgettingawayfromEngland,mainlybecauseofthetreatmentshereceivedatthehandsofthenewspa-pe-rs.Idon'tthinksheeverunderstoodwhyhergenuinelygoodintentionsweresneeredatbythemedia,whythereappearedtobeapermanentquestontheirbehalftobringherdown.Itisbaffling.Myown,andonly,explanationisthatgenuinegoodnessisthreateningtothoseattheoppositeendofthemoralspectrum.ItisapointtorememberthatofalltheironiesaboutDiana,perhapsthegreatestwasthis;thatagirlgiventhenameoftheancientgoddessofhuntingwas,intheend,themosthuntedpersonofthemodernage.ShewouldwantustodaytopledgeourselvestoprotectingherbelovedboysWilliamandHarryfromasimilarfate.AndIdothishere,Diana,onyourbehalf.Wewillnotallowthemtosuffertheanguishthatusedregularlytodriveyoutotearfuldespair.Beyondthat,onbehalfofyourmotherandsisters,Ipledgethatwe,yourbloodfamily,willdoallwecantocontinuetheimaginativeandlovingwayinwhichyouweresteeringthesetwoexceptionalyoungmen,sothattheirsoulsarenotsimplyimm
