Ifacosmopolitancityistobedefinedasaplacewherecirculationofdifferentpeople,knowledge,technology,cultures,ideologies,capitalandgoodsthroughouthistoryintersectsandtransposes,thenIstanbulhasperformedthisfunctionforseveralthousandyears:
Istanbulisa«globaljunctionpoint»thatnotonlyconnectscontinents,butalsocivilizationsandlatelynewformsofmodernities.Onthearchitecturalmilieu,Istanbul’surbantextureisshapedbythesurvivingfragmentsofGreek,Roman,Byzantine,VenetianandOttomancivilizations,whichinterfusewithrapidlyexpandingmodernandglobalframeworks.IthasOrthodoxChristianchurches,Sunnimosques,Sephardicsynagogues,classicalcisterns,ringsofancientfortificationsandembellishedpalacesinthesameframewithgrandboulevards,metropolitancenters,gatedsuburbs,derelictslumsandshinyskyscrapers.Thiscorrespondstoanurbanagglomerationthatdoesnotdefineaunifiedtotality;insteaditindicatesconflicts,consensusesandchaoticflows.

CurrentlyYenikapıhasaveryfragmentedurbantexture.Inordertoconnectitsfragmentedzoneswitheachother,apublicplatformisdesigned,thatactsasanurbanknotbetweentheregeneratednorthernurbanfringeandthesoutherncoastalpark.TheconjunctiveplatformnotonlyaugmentstheurbanintegrationoftheexternalzonessuchasCerrahpasa,AksarayandNisancaDistricts,butalsoconstitutesitsinternalframeworkinterlinkingthenorthernArchaeoParkzonetothesouthernEco-coastalzonebyusingtheAncientTheodosiusWalltracesasapublicconnectorandpassingthroughtheclustersofthewatercampus.Byintegratingdifferentsocialsegments,especiallyinYalıandInebeyDistricts,programmaticdiversitycanbeobtained.Thiswillenhancea24-houractivityofYenikapi.

Furthermoretheinfrastructuralvisionistointegratethehighway,railwayandwaterwaysystemswithacontinuouspedestrianaccess,forminga«holisticinter-link»throughthenorth-southaxis.ThislinkpedetrianizesNamıkKemalBoulevard,InebeyDistrictandcreatesanewAksaraySquaretoconnectthetramandVatanandMillethighwaystothenorth,generatesamajorTransferHubwithmetro,Marmarayandsuburbanrailwayintegrationinitscenterandrelocatestheseaterminaltoitsendingpointtothesoutherncoast,infiltratingandrejuvenatingurbanzonessuchasInebeyandYalıDistrictsalongtheway.Astheresultofintegratingtransportationsystemsalongcontinuouspedestrianflows,manyoftheproblemsareaddressedbyenhancingtheNewPortalcharacterofYenikapıthroughacongestiveurbanvision.

Ahistoricalurbancentercannotsustainitsvitalityunlessitattractsnewactivitiesandinvestments.DaytimepopulationofHistoricalPeninsulais2.5millionwithitsdensebuttransitorymanufacturingandtouristiccongestion,yetbynightitdiminishesintoamere50.000,indicatingahighlydramaticurbanandsocialdownfallonadailybasis.Thisprojectre-evaluatesYenikapıwithdiversefunctionstoinjecturbanviabilityintothePeninsula,allocatescontinuousandalternativeactivitieswhichmaketheurbantexturemoreattractive.Yenikapiisleadingthisprojecttopresentthecitywithaholistictransferhub,auniquearchaeoparkandculturalplaza,twoiconicattractorsandavividpubliccoastalzone.

YenikapıTransferCenterisadistinctiveplace,providingmemoriesandaddingvalueandservicestothetravelers’life.Contemporarytransferpointsactascatalystsforurbanregenerationanddevelopment.WiththehelpofYenikapıTransferCenter,acommunity-based«UrbanDiversificiation»strategyisimplementedthroughtheurbanvisionzone,primarilyconservingthehistoricaltexturewithitscosmopolitanheritageandsecondarilyinjectingdifferenturbanfunctionstoattractdiversepopulationswithdifferentsocioeconomicalbackgrounds.Ontheotherhandthephysicalpresenceoftransportsystemsshouldnotbeaburdenorbarrierontheimmediateenvironment.Theyshouldbeefficient,butalsoasmodestaspossibleinsize,whichhasbeenoneofthebasicprinciplestocompactizeYenikapiTransferCenterandfeedingbacktheurbanspacewithacontinuoussunkenplaza.Asaresult,Archaeo-LandscapeandtheHolisticInter-linkasaninfrastructuralframeworkareorganizedtocoexistinaheterarchicalequilibrium.

Creatinganinvitingparkenvironmentisoneofthemainaspectsofthedesign.Tocreateahighqualitypark,providinggoodgrowingconditionsisakeyelement.SustainabilityisembeddedintheTransferPointandArchaeoParkmostlyonanurbanlevel.Implementationsofprovenandnewtechnologiesareproposedtherewheretheyfindsynergywithitsdirectsurroundings;thebenefitsshouldmerelyservethepublicrealm.Asolarroofisbyfarnotsufficienttoacclimatizeamuseum,butitcouldbringlighttotheparkandtheexcavationpits.Awindmillatthecoastisnotsufficienttohaveastationoperational,buttheenergycouldeasilypumpthecollectedrainwatertothevegetationthroughouttheparkanditmightlightthenewboardwalkconnectionsfromthecitytothecoastalpark.Therumblefromthedemolishedstructureswillnotbeenoughtobuildthearchive,butitwouldbeaperfectbaseforretainingwallsaroundtheexcavationpits.

AsthesoilisprobablypollutedbythepresentusageandcleanwaterinIstanbulisscarce,additionalmeasureshavetobetaken.Thegroundcomingfromthetransferandarchivepitwillneedtobetransportedfromthesiteduetoitsquantity;itcouldbeusedforreinforcementandreshapingofthelandfillalongthecoastalline.Thegroundcomingfromthearchaeologicalpitswillbekeptinaclosedgroundbalanceonsite.Onitstemporarypositionitcanbefilteredandfertilizedbytherightvegetation.Therainwater,comingdownfromthenortherncityontothelowersituatedlandscape,willbecapturedandstoredinwells.Thesewaterpointsaremostlysituatedinwithintheoldcitywalls;aplayfulreferencetotheTheodosiustimes.

TheArchaeoParkinfactisaparkincontinuoustransition;overaperiodofsomewhat20yearsthelargeareawilltransformfromthecurrenthugesurfaceofasphaltofthecomplexofbusstationstoanopen-airlaboratoryofexcavationstofinallybecomethelusciousgreenvoidithasbeeninpasttimes.TheriverwhichsiltedtheTheodosiusPortturnedthewalledareaintoamostfertileone.Ithasbeenafoodplantationandafterabotanicalgardenformanyyears;tobetracedonhistoricalmaps.Yet,nowthegreenvoidisenrichedwiththevaluabletracesofhistoryembeddedinthelandscape.

Thelandcoveringthenewtransfertunnelisexcavatedalreadyandcanbeturnedintoalusciousparkasfromnow.Thisareaalongtheraisedtraintrackandwithinthehistoriccitywallscanslowlystarttofunctionasagreenescapeforthedenseneighborhoodssurroundings.Acombinationoffruitandolivetreeswithintimatenichesofgrassandcoolingwaterwells,leavingtracesoftheexcavationgrid,willallowforvisitorstostrollandpicknickonalazyafternoon.Whilethenorthernpart,framedbytheKucuklangaStreet,willbethelargestarchaeologicalinnercitysiteforthecomingdecades,pedestrianswanttoinfiltrateandconnecttosurroundingdistricts.Thereforeconnectingboardwalksareprovided;justafewstepsabovethemuddysiteonecanenjoythearchaeologists’slowanddelicateworkinsitucreatingacontrastwiththesuperfastteleportationofthetransitorypopulation.

WheretheparkcrossesNemakKemalBoulevardwithitswoodenboardwalk,theparkturnsintoaplaza,infrontofthestationhall.TheplazaisthecentreofaPublicPlatformwhichextendstoAksaraySquarethroughthepedestrianizedstreetsandcontinuousallthewaytothecoastwiththeMarmaraySeaTerminal.Mostpeoplewillentertheplazacomingfromthenorthernneighbourhoods,butalsofromthecampusandofcoursetheHistoricPeninsula.OtherswillenterfromthebusstoporthecoastalparkandYaliDistrict.Althoughthelargestflowwillarriveontheplazafromthetransfercentreitself.Inordertomakethisvastareaintoapublicspacewhereoneisseducedtolingerandspenttime,tomeet,toshop,tobeeducatedandentertained,theplazashouldbehostingpassengersandofferingagreaturbaneventspace.

ThePlazaitselfisanopenareawhichallowsforlargeeventsandlargecrowds;itisanurbanplateauforpassengersrushingviatheshortcutstocatchtheirtrainandmoresovisitorswhowillmakeuseoftheinvitingpublicspace.Ontheplazatheexcavationgridisvisibleinthetwotonednaturalstonepavement.Scatteredovertheplaza,butmainlyalongthebordersfieldsofthegridwillgetagreeninfill.Avarietyofvegetationcanbeimagined;Elephantgrass,flowerbeds,leavetreesetceteraPalmtreeswillgivemoreshadeandenrichestheheight.ThestationhallandtheCityArchivewillbelightinguplikethornsontheratherdimmedplaza;inthiswayonecaneasilyfinditswaytotheattractors.Connectin
