Firstofall,itseemsthatasuccessfulscientistisfullofcuriosity—hewantstofindouthowandwhytheuniverseworks.

Itissometimessaidthatthereisnosuchthingastheso-called'
scientificmethod'
;
thereareonlythemethodsusedinscience.Nevertheless,itseemsclearthatthereisoftenaspecialsequenceofprocedureswhichisinvolvedintheestablishmentoftheworkingprinciplesofscience.Thissequenceisasfollows:
人们有时说,没有所谓的“科学方法”;
只有科学中使用的方法。

Asanillustrationofthiswecanconsiderthediscoveryofair-pressure.Overtwothousandyearsago,mendiscoveredamethodofraisingwaterfromoneleveltoanotherbymeansofthevacuumpump.When,however,thismachinepassedintogeneraluseinthefifteenthandsixteenthcenturies,itwasdiscoveredthat,nomatterhowperfectthepumpwas,itwasnotpossibletoraisewaterverticallymorethanabout35feet.Why?
Galileo,amongstothers,recognizedtheproblem,butfailedtosolveit.
