In1819,thesameyearthatLouisenteredtheInstitution,CharlesBarbier,anarmycaptain,reportedtotheAcademyofSciencesonasystemofraiseddotsanddasheswhichenabledsoldierstoreadmessagesinthedark.Later,BarbierbroughthisinventiontotheInstitution.Afterexperimentingwithit,youngBrailleproducedawritingsystemusingonlydots,fromwhichhegraduallydevised63separatecombinationsrepresentingthelettersintheFrenchalphabet.(attherequestofanEnglishman,helateradded“w”),accents,punctuationmarks,andmathematicalsigns.Althoughgovernmentpreventedimmediateofficialadoption,hissystemwasusedattheInstitutionaslongasthedirector,Dr.Pignier,wasinoffice.Thenewdirectorinsistedonreturningtotheofficiallyapprovedformersystem,butstudentscontinuedtouseBraille’smethodsecretly.Eventually,itssuperioritywasestablishedanditwasadoptedthroughoutFrance.
