ThestoryoftheUniversitybegan,sofarasIknow,in1209whenseveralhundredstudentsandscholarsarrivedinthelittletownofCambridgeafterhavingwalked60milesfromOxford.
Ofcoursetherewerenocollegesinthoseearlydaysandstudentlifewasverydifferentfromwhatitisnow.Studentswereofallagesandcamefromanywhereandeverywhere.Theywerearmed;
someevenbandedtogethertorobthepeopleofthecountryside.Graduallytheideaofthecollegedeveloped,andin1284,Peterhouse,theoldestcollegeinCambridge,wasfounded.

In1440KingHenryVIfoundedKing’sCollege,andtheothercollegesfollowed.Erasmus,thegreatDutchscholar,wasatoneofthese,Queens’College,from1511to1513,andthoughhewrotethatthecollegebeerwas“weakandbadlymade”,healsomentionedapleasantcustomthatunfortunatelyseemstohaveceased.
