TheAmazingPenguinRescue

Thesummerof2016,theshipMVTreasuresunk,creatinganoilspill.ThirteenhundredtonsoffueloilwereflowingrightinthemiddleoftheAfricanPenguins’habitat.Soontheoilcoveredabout20,000penguins.Withoutswifthelp,theseabirdswouldhavenochanceforsurvival.VolunteerswereshowingupbythethousandsandIalsotookpartinwhatwasthelargestanimalrescueoperationever.

Awarehousewasturnedintoarescuecenternearthehabitatandhundredsofpoolswerebuilttoholdabout100oiledbirdseach.Whenwalkingintothecenter,Icouldn’tbelievemyears.Ihadexpectedtowalkintoachorusofhonkingandsquawking(叫声).Instead,thecentersoundedlikealibrary.Thepenguinsweredeadsilent.Myheartachedforthepainfulbirds.Cleaningthemallseemedlikeanimpossibletask.Butwehadtocarryonlikedoctorsinanemergencyroom.Therewasnotimefordoubt.Cleaningoiloffapenguinwasn’teasy.Evenwithmorethan12,500volunteers,ittookamonthtobatheall20,000birdsatthecenter.

Whilevolunteerswerebusybathingtheoiledpenguins,anothercrisis(危机)wasdeveloping.Oilfromthespillhadstartedmovingnorth.Tensofthousandsofpenguinswereintheoil’spath.Butwealreadyhadourhandsfullwith20,000recoveringbirds.Ifanymorebirdswereoiled,wewouldn’thaveenoughresourcestosavethem.
