“WhatIforesee,relativelysoon,isthecapabilityofnothavingtochargeyourcellphoneforanentireweek,forexample,becausethatenergywillbeproducedbyyourmovement,”saidSepulveda,whoseresearchisfundedbytheNationalScienceFoundation.
Electricalenergyiscreatedwhenthedeviceiscompressedbyhumanmotion.Thecompleteddeviceisasthinasasheetofpaper.ThedeviceusedtopowertheLEDlightswaspalm-sized,whilethedeviceusedtopowerthetouchscreenwasassmallasafinger.Advantagessuchasbeinglightweight,flexibleandlow-costcouldmakeitapromisingandalternativemethodinthefieldofmechanical-energyharvesting.
Thedevicealsobecomesmorepowerfulwhenfolded.Sepulvedasaid,“Youcanstartwithalargedevice,butwhenyoufolditonce,andagain,andagain,it’smuchsmallerandhasmoreenergy.Nowitmaybesmallenoughtoputinaspeciallymadeheelofyourshoesoitcreatespowereachtimeyourheelstrikestheground.”
