 TheABCNewslegalanalystsaidheapproachedthebooklikealawyer.Afterreadinganarticlethatclaimedfemalesuperiorityincertainjobs,hedidsomedigging.Soon,he’dfoundsomanystudiesassertingthatwomenwerebetter—betterattoleratingpain,betterwithhammers,betterstudents,betterinvestors,betteratappreciatingagoodjoke—thatAbramsrealizedhehadaclearcasethatwomenwerebetterat“justabouteverything.”

 Iaskedafewladiesfortheirreaction.WellIknewthat,respondedmostwithasmile.ThementhatIapproached,however,didacollectiveeyeroll.Oneevenquestionedmymotives.Afterall,I’vereportedonahostofrecentbooksandarticlesthatpaintmodernmenas,well,losers.Afewrecenttitles:

“Idon’tviewthisasacausebook,”saidAbrams.“Thisisnottosuggestthatmenareunnecessary,butwomenarepassingmeninalotofimportantareas.”

 He’sthefirsttopointoutthattheguysarenotsopleased.Manyhavecalledhim“sexist”anda“sellout.”Oneaptlynamedboysclub,MenAreAngryNow,petitionedtogetAbramsfiredwhenheannouncedthebookonNBC.

 Althoughhedidnotdemanda“particularlyrigorousscientificmethod”orrequiretop-tierdoubleblindstudies,Abramssayshe’sfoundclearevidenceto“bashsomeofthestereotypes”againstwomen.Mostsurprisingtohimwasthefindingthatwomenwerebetterhedgefundmanagers,despitethatthefieldis97%male.

 AccordingtodatabyHedgeFundResearch,femalemanagersproducedaverageannualreturnsof9%from2000to2009,comparedtomalemanager’s5.82%–nearlydoublingmen’sperformance.Moreover,AbramsuncovereddatareportedbyBusinessWeekthatfundsrunbywomenlosthalfasmuchasthoserunbymenduringtherecession.

 “Tothinkthatthose3%offemalemanagersarebetterthanthe97%ofmalemanagersisastonishing,”Abramssaid.“There’snoquestionthatwomenaremoreriskaverse,thoughtfulanddeliberative.”
