AnEnglishteacherusuallydivideshertimeamongthreesubjects:
language(grammar,punctuation,spelling,etc.),composition,andliterature.Mrs.Cox’sfavoritesubjectisliterature,andhermostexcitingclassesarethoseontheliteratureofBlackAmericans.ForMrs.Cox,likemostofthestudentsinherschool,isBlack.

Assheansweredthequestions,Mrs.Coxmadesurethatherstudentsunderstoodeverylineofthepoem.Sheaskedthemtodiscussifthepoemcontainedanymessage.Thediscussionbecamesolivelythatnoonewantedtostopwhenthebellrang.Somesaidtherewasnomessage,somesaidtherewas,somesaiditdidn’treallymatter,andtheclassendedatthat.
