Philosophy,OrganizingFramework,andFacultyBeliefs
Thephilosophyofthenursingprogramsisconsistentwiththemission,goalsandobjectivesofTheAlabamaCollegeSystem.Theprogramsprovidecurriculatodeveloptheknowledge,skills,andabilitiesnecessaryforentrylevelemploymentinpracticalandprofessionalnursing.
Maslow’stheoryisthefoundationfortheprogramoflearning.AccordingtoMaslow,allindividualshavesimilarneedsarrangedinahierarchywithhigherneedsemergingasbasicphysiologicalneedsaremet.Individualsareuniquebiological,psychosocialandspiritualbeingswhostrivetomeetholisticneeds.Eachindividualhastherighttomakeinformeddecisionsaboutone’shealthinatechnologicallychangingsociety.Society,acomplexsystemthatinfluencesculture,values,andbeliefs,providesdirectionandmeaningtoanindividual’sexperiencesthroughoutthelifespan.
Health,whichisindividuallyperceived,existswhenneedsaremet.Rangingonacontinuumfromhighestlevelwellnesstodeath,healthisadynamicstate.Thegoalsofhealthcarearetopromote,maintain,andrestorehealth.
Nursingisanart,aswellas,ascienceinwhichtheholisticneedsoftheindividualaremetthroughutilizationofthenursingprocessinavarietyofsettings.Thenursingprocessincorporatesscientificprinciples,interpersonalandpsychomotorskills.Thepracticeofnursingtakesplaceinaneverchanginghealthcaresystemandrequirescaring,criticalthinking,competency,legal/ethicalaccountability,dedicationtoanevolvingbodyofknowledge,lifelonglearningandclientadvocacy.
Theteaching-learningprocessisasharedresponsibilitybetweenfacultyandstudentswherefacultyserveasfacilitatorsoflearning.Thesuccessfulteaching-learningprocessrequiresanenvironmentthatpromoteslearning,considerstheneedsoftheindividual,andprovidesopportunitiesforstudentparticipationandeducationalgoalattainment.Thelearningprocessisbasedonprinciplesofcriticalthinkingandisenhancedbythepresentationofinformationfromsimpletocomplex.Learningisachievedwhenthereisevidenceofachangeinbehaviorwithinthecognitive,affective,and/orpsychomotordomains.Individualshavetherighttoachieveself-actualizationandsocietyprovideseducationalopportunities.
Nursingeducationisalearner-centeredprocesswhichcombinesgeneraleducationandnursingcoursestopreparetheindividualforthepracticeofnursing.Incorporatingaprogramoflearning,avarietyofinstructionalmethodologies,andavailableresources,nursingeducationfosterscompetency,accountabilityandcontinuedprofessionaldevelopment.Learningisalifelongprocesswhichpromotesprofessionalismandisbeneficialforthelearnerandsociety.Threadsintegratedthroughoutcurriculuminclude:
CriticalThinking,Communication,Nutrition,Pharmacology,CulturalDiversity,Lifespan,Pathophysiology,Technology,Teaching/Learning,Legal/Ethical,rolesoftheNurse.
OrganizingFramework
Theorganizing(conceptual)frameworkwasdevelopedbytheAlabamaCollegeSystem’snursingeducationrepresentativesandadoptedbytheLSCCnursingfaculty.Theschematicdrawingisdesignedtorepresentacompletepictureoftheprogramoflearningandisintheformofanumbrella.Thedescriptionoftheorganizingframeworkisasfollows:
Theumbrellathatrepresentsadiagrammaticschemeofthenursingprogram’sorganizingframework.Inorderfortheumbrellatofunctionproperly,itmustbeunfurled,haveallofitspartsconnectedanditsfabricintact.Thenursingfacultyvisualizestheorganizingframeworkasthefoundationofthenursingcurriculumandrealizesthatitmustbeopenedtoberealized,haveallofitspartsconnectedanditsfabricintact.Thephilosophyisrepresentedasthehandleoftheumbrellaandisusedtounfurlthecurriculum.Theframeworkidentifiesfourmajorconcepts:
nursing,nursingprocess,humanneeds,andthehealth-illnesscontinuumthataredepictedashorizontalbandsontheumbrella.Theelevenribsoftheumbrellarepresenttheelevencurriculumthreadsthatareintegratedthroughoutthecurriculum.Thesethreadsinclude:
criticalthinking,communication,nutrition,pharmacology,culturaldiversity,lifespan,pathophysiology,technology,teaching-learning,legal/ethical,androlesofthenurse.ThethreadsandmajorconceptsconnectthefabricofthecurriculumtothepinnacleoftheumbrellawhichrepresentsthePNandADNprogramoutcomes.
Thebeliefsofthefacultyarereflectedinthestandardizedphilosophy/missionandgiveconsiderationtothedevelopmentofthestudentasaperson,practitioner,andcitizen.LSCC’snursingfacultyenhancesthestandardizedphilosophy/missionwiththesefurtherbeliefsanddefinitionsofnursingconceptsandcurriculumthreads.
FacultyBeliefs
Individualsareuniquewithbasicneedswhichareinfluencedbytheinternalandexternalenvironment.Individualsproceedthroughsequentialstagesofdevelopment,andstrivetoattainand/ormaintainhealththroughgratificationofthebasicneeds.
Societyisastructuredsocialsystem.Withinthissystemexistsculturalvalues,beliefsandmoresthatinfluencemaninhispursuitofneedsgratificationthatarecommunicatedthroughinterpersonalrelationships.
Healthisviewedonacontinuumwithnosinglepointdesignedaswellnessorillness.Healthisapositivestateofwell-being,encompassingman’sabilitytogratifyhisbasicneeds;thusallowinghimtofunctionathisoptimumlevel.Illnessisanalteredstatewhichthreatensman’sabilitytogratifyhisbasicneeds,thuspreventinghimfunctioningathisoptimumlevel.
Nursingisanartandsciencewhichutilizesthenursingprocessastheframeworkforcriticalthinkinginpractice.Thenursingprocessisinterpersonalinnatureandincludesestablishingandanalyzingdatatoidentifyactual/potentialhealthalterationsbasedonassessment;settinggoalstomeettheindividualsorgroupofindividual’sbasicneeds;planningandimplementingcaretoachieveexpectedoutcomes;anddeterminingtheextenttowhichgoalshavebeenachieved.Theprimaryfocusofnursingistopromotehealth,tomaintainhealth,torestorehealth,topreventalterationsinhealth,andtoenableapeacefuldeath.Nursingfromitsuniqueperspectiveintegratesknowledgefromthehumanities,thebiological,socialandbehavioralscienceswithhumanisticcaretoprovidehealthcare.
Educationistheprocessofchangingbehaviorthroughthedevelopmentofcognitive,affective,andpsychomotorabilitiesinherentintheindividual.Itisapurposefulactivitywhichbuildsonpreviouslearningexperiences.
Teaching/Learningisanactiveprocessandismutuallysharedbetweentheteacherandthelearner.Teachingistheprocesswherebylearnersareengagedinsituationsfromwhichtheyacquirenewormodifiedwaysofbehaving.Learningisviewedasadynamiclifelongprocessofgainingnewinsightsreflectingbehavioralchanges.Learningisahighlyindividualexperiencewhichproceedsatvaryingrates.Learningimpliesgoaldirectedactivities.Webelievethatstudentsareresponsiblefortheirownlearningthroughactiveparticipationintheteaching/learningprocess.Thedegreeofactiveinvolvementinthelearningprocessgreatlyinfluencestheeducationaloutcomes.Theteacherguidesandfacilitateslearning;createsanenvironmentofmutualtrust,caring,andrespect;andactsasaresourcepersonintheprocess.
NursingEducationiscomprisedofbothgeneraleducationandnursingcourses.Webelievethatnursingeducation,throughplannedexperiences,providesthestudentwiththeknowledgeandtechnicalskillsnecessaryforcompetentpractice.Theseexperiencesareplannedsothattheyprogressfromthesimpletocomplex.Theemphasisoftheeducationalprogramisbasedupontheacquisitionofskillsandtheapplicationofscientificprinciplesnecessaryincaringforindividuals/groupsofindividualswhoarelocatedalongthehealth-illnesscontinuumandwhoareatvariousstagesinthedevelopmentalprocess.Thegoalofnursingeducationistopreparearegisterednursewhofunctionsasaself-directedindividualorapracticalnursewhofunctionsunderthesupervisionofaregisterednurse,physician,ordentisteachofwhomacceptsresponsibilityandaccountabilityforhis/herpersonalandprofessionalbehavior.Nursingeducationprovidestheopportunityforstudentstobuildupontheirpreviousrelevanteducationandexperiences.
Throughanorganizedsequenceofplannedguidedlearningexperiences,studentsareprovidedasolidfoundationuponwhichtodevelopcognitive,psychomotor,andaffectiveabilitiesnecessarytomakesoundnursingdecisionsandtopracticecompetentlyaseitheraregisterednurseorapracticalnurse.Thecurriculumprovidesfortheacquisitionofknowledge,skillsandattitudesinherentintherolesbasictoassociatedegreenursingpracticeandthepracticalnursingincludingtherolesofproviderofcare;managerofcare;andmemberwithinthediscipleofnursing.
Nursingeducationisbestachievedininstitutionsofhighereducationwherebythestudentisaffordedtheopportunitytointeractwithotherstudentsinthevariouscultural,academic,andextracurricularactivities.GraduatesofboththeADNprogramandthePNprogramarestronglyencouragedtopursueadvancedprofessionaldegrees.
Thescopeofnursingpracticeincludesseveralcategoriesofhealthcareproviderswhodifferinfunctionallevelsrangingfromsimpletocomplexandareprovidedbyindividualswithvaryingskillsandcompetenciesgainedfromdifferentnursingeducationpreparations.Withinthisspectrum,theunlicensedassistivepersonnelassistswithsimplenursingtasksund
