We'vealsobeguntochangethecultureinWashington.We'veevenmadetheWhiteHouseaplacewherepeoplecanlearnandcangrow.Justrecently,LarrySummersaskedifhecouldchairtheWhiteHouseCouncilonWomenandGirls.（Laughter.）AndIdoappreciatethatLarryisheretonightbecauseitissevenhourspasthisbedtime.（Laughter.）Gibbslikedthatone.（Laughter.）

Inthelasthundreddays,we'vealsogrowntheDemocraticPartybyinfusingitwithnewenergyandbringinginfresh,youngfaceslikeArlenSpecter.（Laughter.）Now,JoeBidenrightlydeservesalotofcreditforconvincingArlentomaketheswitch,butSecretaryClintonactuallyhadalottodowithittoo.Onedayshejustpulledhimasideandshesaid,Arlen,youknowwhatIalwayssay--"ifyoucan'tbeatthem,jointhem."（Laughter.）

Whichbringsmetoanotherthingthat'schangedinthisnew,warmer,fuzzierWhiteHouse,andthat'smyrelationshipwithHillary.Youknow,wehadbeenrivalsduringthecampaign,butthesedayswecouldnotbecloser.Infact,thesecondshegotbackfromMexicoshepulledintoahugandgavemeabigkiss.（Laughter.）ToldmeI'dbettergetdowntheremyself.（Laughter.）WhichIreallyappreciated.Imean,itwas--itwasnice.（Laughter.）

Ijust--Iwanttoendbysayingafewwordsaboutthemenandwomeninthisroomwhosejobitistoinformthepublicandpursuethetruth.Youknow,wemeettonightatamomentofextraordinarychallengeforthisnationandfortheworld,butit'salsoatimeofrealhardshipforthefieldofjournalism.Andlikesomanyotherbusinessesinthisglobalage,you'veseensweepingchangesandtechnologyandcommunicationsthatleadtoasenseofuncertaintyandanxietyaboutwhatthefuturewillhold.

Acrossthecountry,thereareextraordinary,hardworkingjournalistswhohavelosttheirjobsinrecentdays,recentweeks,recentmonths.AndIknowthateachnewspaperandmediaoutletiswrestlingwithhowtorespondtothesechanges,andsomearestrugglingsimplytostayopen.Anditwon'tbeeasy.Noteveryendingwillbeahappyone.

Butit'salsotruethatyourultimatesuccessasanindustryisessentialtothesuccessofourdemocracy.It'swhatmakesthisthingwork.Youknow,ThomasJeffersononcesaidthatifhehadthechoicebetweenagovernmentwithoutnewspapers,ornewspaperswithoutagovernment,hewouldnothesitatetochoosethelatter.

Clearly,ThomasJeffersonneverhadcablenewstocontendwith--（laughter）--buthiscentralpointremains:

Agovernmentwithoutnewspapers,agovernmentwithoutatoughandvibrantmediaofallsorts,isnotanoptionfortheUnitedStatesofAmerica.（Applause.）

SoImaynot--Imaynotagreewitheverythingyouwriteorreport.Imayevencomplain,ormorelikelyGibbswillcomplain,fromtimetotimeabouthowyoudoyourjobs,butIdosowiththeknowledgethatwhenyouareatyourbest,thenyouhelpmebeatmybest.YouhelpallofuswhoserveatthepleasureoftheAmericanpeopledoourjobsbetterbyholdingusaccountable,bydemandinghonesty,bypreventingusfromtakingshortcutsandfallingintoeasypoliticalgamesthatpeoplearesodesperatelywearyof.

Andthatkindofreportingisworthpreserving--notjustforyoursake,butforthepublic's.Wecountonyoutohelpusmakesenseofacomplexworldandtellthestoriesofourlivesthewaytheyhappen,andwelookforyoufortruth,evenifit'salwaysanapproximation,evenif--（laughter.）
