VanGoghwasthesonofapastor(牧师).Heleftschoolwhenhewasjust15.Bytheageof27,hehadalreadytriedmanyjobsincludinganartgallerysalesmanandaFrenchteacher.Finallyin1880,hedecidedtobeginhisstudiesinart.

VanGoghisfamedforhisabilitytoputhisownemotionsintohispaintingsandshowhisfeelingsaboutascene.Hisstyleismarkedbyshort,broadbrushstrokes(笔画).“InsteadoftryingtoreproduceexactlywhatIhavebeforemyeyes,Iusecolormorefreely,inordertoexpressmyselfmoreforcibly,”hewroteinalettertohisbrotherin1888.

VanGoghsoldonlyonepaintingduringhisshortlife.Hereliedheavilyonthesupportfromhisbrother,anartdealerwholivedinParis.Butnowhisworksaresoldformillionsofdollars.HisportraitofDr.Gachersoldfor$89.5millionin1990.Itisthehighestpriceeverpaidforapainting.“Ithinkhispaintingsarepowerfulandthebrilliantcolorsinthemareattractivetopeople,”saidaVanGogh’sfan.
