10Yearslater,EveCurie,scarcelyayearoldwhenherfatherdied,wrotethatPierre’sdeathmarkedthedefiningmomentinhermother’slife:
“MarieCuriedidnotchangefromahappyyoungwifetoaninconsolablewidow.Themetamorphosiswaslesssimple,moreserious.Acapeofsolitudeandsecrecyfelluponhershouldersforever.”Mariewasjust38.TheSundayafterthefuneral,insteadofstayingwithfamilyandfriends,sheretreatedtothelab.InherdiaryshewrotePierre:

13LatershewentbacktotheRadiumInstitutesheestablished,teaching,travelingandlecturinguntilherdeath,atage66,onJuly4,1934.Thecausewasaplasticperniciousanemia,mostlikelyduetoherlong,devastatingexposuretoradiumandotherradioactiveelements.
