Thefirstsentenceofthewholenovelproclaims,“Itisatruthuniversallyacknowledged,thatasinglemaninpossessionofagoodfortunemustbeinwantofawife.”(7)Here,“agoodfortune”and“inwantof”aretwokeyphrases.“Inwantof”meansitisneededobjectively,butnotsubjectively.Suchkindofwordingmakesthepropositionhavemoreobjectivityof“truth”.(8)InPrideandPrejudice,thebonnetsaretakenasthetypicaltotestthe“truthuniversallyacknowledged”.

2.2TheBennets

Mr.andMrs.Bennethavebeenmarriedfortwenty-threeyears,buttheydonotreallycommunicatewitheachother.Theyhavefiveunmarrieddaughters.Mr.Bennethasagoodsenseofhumourandlikestoteasehiswife.Hepretendsnottounderstandher.Hemakesoutrageousstatementsthathiswifebelieves.Hedoesnotdemonstrateanyaffectiontowardshiswifeandistiredofthewayshebehaves.Mrs.Bennetdoesnotgetupsetwhensheistheobjectofherhusband’ssarcasmandisnotintelligentenoughtodiscriminatebetweenimportantandtrivialinformation.Whensheisfrustratedshecomplainsabouthernerves.Mrs.BennetdoesnotunderstandMr.Bennet,andwhileMrs.Bennet’saiminlifeistogetherdaughtersmarriedtorichmen,Mr.Bennetisnotinterestedinfamilyaffairsanddoesnotseemtothinkmuchofhisdaughters,orgirlsingeneral.Theyareallsillyandignorantlikeothergirls.JaneAustentellsushisfavouritedaughterisElizabeth.
