In2008,theUSgovernmentcameoutwithitsfirstsetofexerciseadvice,calledPhysicalActivityGuidelinesforAmericans.Theguidelineswerebasedonresearchbyscientistsintohowpeoplecouldstayhealthybybeingactive.
Since2008,scientistshavelearnedmoreabouthowhelpfulexerciseis.Forexample,they'
velearnedthatbeingactivecanmakeitmuchlesslikelythatsomeonewillsufferfromillnesses.Exercisealsomakespeopleworryless,sleepbetter,andmakestheirbrainsworkbetter.So,now,tenyearslater,afterthegovernmenthasstudiedthefindings,they'
vecomeupwithanewsetofguidelines.
Muchoftheadviceisthesameasitwasin2008,butthereareafewchanges.Onechangeisthatthegovernmenthasaddedactivityguidelinesforchildrenaged3to5.Thiswasnotincludedin2008,becauseyoungerchildrenwereusuallyveryactivethen.Butnow,asyoungchildrenspendmoretimelookingatscreens,theyaremovingless.Thegovernmentsaysthatchildrenbetween3and5shouldhaveatleastthreehoursofactiveplayaday.
Forchildrenaged6to17,theguidelineshavenotchangedmuchsince2008.Thegovernmentsaystheyshouldgetatleastanhourofmediumtoveryactivemovementeveryday.mostoftheseactivitiesshouldbestrongenoughtoraisetheheartrate.Childrenshouldalsodoactivitiesthatbuildmusclesatleastthreetimesaweek.
In2008,thegovernmentsaidthatadultsshouldgetatleast150to300minutesofmediumstrengthactivityeveryweek.Butonly20%ofAmericansactuallymovethatmuch.Nowbasedonnewscientificfindings,thegovernmentsaysthatevenshortperiodsofmovementthatraisetheheartratearehelpful.
