Thecomputermousewasinventedin1964byDouglasEnglehartofStanfordUniversity.Ascomputerscreensbecamemorepopularandarrowkeyswereusedtomovearoundabodyoftext,itbecameclearthatapointingdevicethatallowedeasiermotionthroughthetextandevenselectionoftextwouldbeveryuseful.Theintroductionofthemouse,withtheAppleLisacomputerin1983,reallystartedthecomputerpublicontheroadtorelyingonthemouseforroutinecomputertasks.

wehavetostartatthebottom,sothinkupsidedownfornow.Itallstartswiththemouseball.Asmemouseballinthebottomofthemouserollsoverthemousepad,itpressesagainstandturnstwoshafts.Theshaftsareconnectedtowheelswithseveralsmallholesinthem.Thewheelshaveapairofsmallelectroniclight—emittingdevicescalledlight—emittingdiodes(LED)mountedoneitherside.OneLEDsendsalightbeamtotheLEDontheotherside.Asthewheelsspinandaholerotatesby,thelightbeamgetsthroughtotheLEDontheotherside.Butamomentlaterthelightbeamisblockeduntilthenextholeisinplace.TheLEDdetectachangingpatternoffight,convertsthepatternintoanelectronicsignal,andsendsthesignaltothecomputerthroughwiresinacablethatgoesoutofthemousebody.Thiscableisthetailthathelpsgivethemouseitsname.ThecomputerinterpretsthesignaltotellitwheretopositiontheCursoronthecomputerscreen.

Sofarwehaveonlydiscussedthebasiccomputermousethatmostofyouprobablyhaveorhaveused.Oneproblemwiththisdesignisthatthemousegetsdirtyastheballrollsoverthesurfaceandpicksupdirt.Eventuallyyouhavetocleanyourmouse.Theneweropticalmiceavoidthisproblembyhavingnomovingparts.
