FileMenu.–TheFilemenuallowsyoutoopenanexistingparameterizationfileorsavethecurrentparameterizationfile.Note,parameterizationfilesaregiventhefileextension.frg.

New.–Createsanew(orblank)parameterizationfile.Itisnotnecessarytobeginbycreatinganewfile.AnewfileisautomaticallyopenedwhenyoustartFRAGSTATS.Thisoptionisusedwhenyouhaveaparameterizationfilecurrentlyopenandwishtocreateanewfilefromscratch.

Open.–Opensanexisting(previouslysaved)parameterizationfile.

Save.–Savesthecurrentparameterizationtoafilewiththeextension.frg.Note,ifyouaresavingaparameterizationfileforthefirsttime,youwillbepromptedtospecifyalocationandfilename.Ifyouaresavingfromanopenparameterizationfile,thiswilloverwritetheexistingfilewithoutpromptingyouforafilename.Thisfilecontainsalltheparametersettingsinthedialogboxesatthetimethefilewassaved.ThiscanbeveryusefulifyouarerunningFRAGSTATSrepeatedlywiththesameorsimilarparameterizationschemes.

Saveas.–Savesthecurrentparameterizationfiletoalocationandfilenamethatyouspecify.

Exit.–Closestheprogram.ThesameeffectisachievedbyclickingontheXintheupperrightcornerofthewindow.
FragstatsMenu.–TheFragstatsmenuallowsyoutoparameterizetheanalysis.
SetRunParameters.–OpensanewdialogboxthatallowsyoutospecifynecessaryparametersforrunningFRAGSTATS(seeStep2).
SelectPatchMetrics.–Opensanewdialogboxthatallowsyoutoselectandparameterizethedesiredpatch-levelmetrics.Note,thisfunctionisnotactiveuntiltheRunParametersdialogboxissuccessfullycompleted,andthenonlyifpatchmetricsareselectedintherunparameters.
SelectClassMetrics.–Opensanewdialogboxthatallowsyoutoselectandparameterizethedesiredclass-levelmetrics.Note,thisfunctionisnotactiveuntiltheRunParametersdialogboxissuccessfullycompleted,andthenonlyifclassmetricsareselectedintherunparameters.
SelectLandscapeMetrics.–Opensanewdialogboxthatallowsyoutoselectandparameterizethedesiredlandscape-levelmetrics.Note,thisfunctionisnotactiveuntiltheRunParametersdialogboxissuccessfullycompleted,andthenonlyiflandscapemetricsareselectedintherunparameters.
ClearAllMenus.–ClearstheRunParameters,Patch-,Class-,andLandscapeMetricsdialogboxes.

ExecuteFragstats.–ExecutesaFRAGSTATSrun.An“executionfinished”messagewillappearinthelogwindowwhenFRAGSTATSprocessingiscomplete.
ToolsMenu.–TheToolsmenuprovidesyouwithseveralmiscellaneousoptionsforcreatingandeditingbatchfiles,reclassifyingclassesandcontrollingclass-leveloutput,browsingresults,andsavingthelogfile.
BatchFileEditor.–Allowsyoutocreateandeditbatchfiles.SeeStep4onUsingBatchFilesfordetailsonthebatchfileeditor.
ClassProperties.–Allowsyoutoeditthepropertiesofeachclass;
thatis,designateclassesasbackgroundanddisabletheoutputforselectedclasses.SeeStep5onModifyingClassPropertiesfordetails.
BrowseResults.–Allowsyoutobrowseandsavetheresultsoftheanalysis.SeeStep7onBrowsingandSavingResultsfordetails.
ClearLog.–Clearsthelogwindowofalltext.
SaveLog.–SavesthelogwindowasanASCIItextfilewiththeextension.logtoalocationandfilenamethatyouspecify.

Step2.SettingRunParameters
AfteropeningtheFRAGSTATSinterface,thenextstepistosettherunparameters.BytheselectingthesetrunparametersoptionintheFragstatsdrop-downmenu,theRunParametersdialogboxwilldisplay(Fig.3).

ThisdialogboxcontainsalltheessentialinputparametersrequiredtorunFRAGSTATSexceptfortheselectionofthemetricsthemselves.Hereiswhereyoudefinetheinputgridorbatchfile,specifytheinputdatatype,chooseananalysistype,selectthepatchIDoutputoption,chooseaneighborruleforpatchdelineation,specifyaclasspropertiesfile,andselectthelevelsofmetricsyouwantcomputed.Thiscontainsmostoftheinformationcontainedinthecommandline(ormostoftheprompts)inversion2.Theorderinwhichtherunparametersarespecifiedisnotimportant,althoughthereisalogicalsequenceforatleastafewoftheparameters.TheparametersarestoredonlyaftertheOKbuttonisclicked.
InputFileType.–ChosebetweenLandscapeandBatchmodes:
(1)Landscape.--IfLandscapemodeisselected,thenFRAGSTATSexpectsthedesignatedinputfiletobeasinglerasterimage;
FRAGSTATSwillproducetheconventionaloutputforthatlandscape.
(2)BatchFile.--IfBatchmodeisselected,thenFRAGSTATSwillrunthebatchfilespecifiedintheInputFiletextboxandproduceoutputforallofthelandscapesdesignatedinthebatchfile.SeeStep4onWorkingwithBatchFilesfordetailsonbuildingasuitablebatchfile.IfBatchmodeisselected,thentheInputDataType(seebelow)andGridAttributes(seebelow)willbecomeinactive(grayedoutintheinterface)becausetheseparameterswillbespecifieduniquelyforeachinputlandscapeinthebatchfile.
InputDataType.–FRAGSTATSacceptsseveraltypesofinputimagedataformats.SeeDataFormatsintheOverviewsectionfordetails.Briefly,allinputimagesshouldbeintegergridswithnon-zeroclassvalues(i.e.,eachcellshouldbeassignedanintegervaluecorrespondingtoitsclassmembershiporpatchtype).Note,assigningthevalue0toanon-backgroundclassisnotallowedinthemovingwindowanalysis,andanerrormessagewillbereportedtothelogfileinthiscase.Inaddition,allinputgridsshouldconsistofsquarecellswiththemeasurementunitsinmeters.Chooseoneofthefollowing:
(1)ArcGridcreatedwithArc/Info.
(2)ASCIIfile,noheader.
(3)8bitbinaryfile,noheader.
(4)16bitbinaryfile,noheader.
(5)32bitbinaryfile,noheader.
(6)ERDASimagefiles(ERDAS7.gisor.lan,8or16bitfiles;
andERDAS8.img,8,16,or32bitfiles).
(7)IDRISIimagefiles(.rdc).
InputFileName.--Specifyaninputfile,wheretheinputfileiseithertheinputimagetobeanalyzed(landscapemode)orabatchfile,byclickingonthefilenamebuttonandnavigatingtothedesiredinputfile.IftheInputDataTypeisselectedfirst,thennavigationtotheinputfilewilldefaulttofilesofthespecifiedtype.Forexample,ifArcGridisselectedastheInputDataType,thenthenavigationwindowwillrevealonlyArcGrids.Inaddition,thelabelontheFileNamebuttonwillreflecttheInputDataType.Onceyouhaveselectedafile,thefullpathandfilenamewillbedisplayedinthetextboxnexttotheFileNamebutton.
OutputFile.–Specifya“basename”fortheoutputfilesbyclickingontheOutputFilebuttonandnavigatingtothedesiredfolder,andthenenteringa“basename”orselectinganexistingfiletooverwrite.Thisbasenamewillbegiventheextensions.patch,.class,.landand.adjforthecorrespondingpatch,class,andlandscapemetricsandadjacencymatrix.Note,youcanautomaticallysavetheresultstooutputfilesbycheckingtheAutomaticallySaveResultscheckbox.Inaddition,itisnotnecessarytoenteranoutputfilebasenamehere.Theresultscanalsobesavedfromthebrowsedialogbox(seeStep7onBrowsingandSavingResults).However,ifanoutputfilenameisspecifiedhere,thenitwillbeusedasthedefaultbasenamewhensavingtheresultsfromthebrowsedialogbox.Ifanoutputfilenameisnotspecifiedhere,thenyouwillbepromptedtoprovideabasenamelaterwhensavingtheresults.Note,ifyouspecifyanoutputfilenamethatalreadyexists,FRAGSTATSwillpromptyouastowhetheryouwanttooverwritetheexistingfilesafterexecutionoftheprogramiscomplete.
