The"Lost"Receipt
Asmytrainwasnotduetoleaveforanotherhour,Ihadplentyof
timetospare.Afterbuyingsomemagazinestoreadonthejourney,
Imademywaytotheluggageofficetocollecttheheavysuitcase
Ihadlefttherethreedaysbefore.Therewereonlyafewpeople
waiting,andltookoutmywallettofindthereceiptformycase.
ThereceiptdidnotseemtobewhereIhadleftit.Iemptiedthe
contentsofthewallet,andrailwaytickets,money,scraps*ofpaper,

andphotographstumbled*outofit;butnomatterhowhardlsearched,thereceiptwasnowheretobefound.
Whenmyturncame,Iexplainedthesituationsorrowfullytotheassistant.Themanlookedatmesuspiciouslyasiftosaythathehadheardthistypeofstorymanytimesandaskedmetodescribethecase.Itoldhimthatitwasanold,brown-lookingobjectnodifferentfromthemanycasesIcouldseeontheshelves.
Theassistantthengavemeaformandtoldmetomakealistofthechiefcontentsofthecase.Iftheywerecorrect,hesaid,Icouldtakethecaseaway.ItriedtorememberallthearticlesIhadhurriedlypackedandwrotethemdownastheycametome.AfterIhaddonethis,Iwenttolookamongtheshelves.Therewerehundredsofcasesthereandforonedreadfulmoment,itoccurredtomethatifsomeonehadpickedthereceiptup,hecouldhaveeasilyclaimed*thecasealready.Thishadnothappenedfortunately,forafteratime,Ifoundthecaselyingonitssidehighupinacorner.Afterexaminingthearticlesinside,theassistantwassoonsatisfiedthatitwasmineandtoldmeIcouldtakethecaseaway.AgainItookoutmywallet:
