   Wojtowicz'steamdivided80youngmaleratsintotwoequalgroups,andplacedrunningwheelsinthecagesofonegroupforaperiodofsixweeks.Aroundfourmonthslater—whentheratshadreachedmiddleage—theteamtaughtalltheratstoconnectanelectricshockwithbeinginaspecificbox.Whenplacedinthebox,theyfrozewithfear.

   Twoweekslater,theteamtestedtheratsinthreesituations:

exactlythesameboxinthesameroom,thesameboxwiththeroomarrangeddifferently,andacompletelydifferentboxinadifferentroom.

   Theratswithoutaccesstoarunningwheelwhentheywereyoungnowfrozethesamepercentageoftimesineachofthesesituations,suggestingtheycouldn'trememberwhichonewasdangerous.Butthosethathadbeenabletorunintheiryouthfroze40to50percentlessinbothchangedboxsettings.

   Spidermonkeyshugeachotherandwraptheirtailsaroundeachother.Theyareveryintelligentandhavestrongmemories.Theywerenamedspidermonkeysbecausetheylooklikespidersastheyhangupsidedownfromtheirtailswitharmsandlegsswinging.Theirgenus(属)nameisAteles,whichmeans“imperfect”.Thisreferstothefactthattheydon'thavethumbs.
