ThefirstbicycleappearedinFranceinthe1790s.Itwasalittlewoodenhorsewithafixedfrontwheel.Becausethewheelwasfixed,itcouldnotbeturnedrightorleft.Theonlywayitcouldbecontrolledwasbytheriderpushingagainstthegroundwithhisorherfeet.In1817,aGermanreplacedthefixedfrontwheelwithonethatcouldbeturned.Nowthewoodenhorsecouldbedirectedrightorleft.Theriderstillneededtopushitwithhisorherfeetontheground.In1839,aScottishMacMillandesignedthefirstbicycle-likemachinewithfootboardandrodeitfor40milesinonly5hours.Thebicyclegotmorecomfortablein1869whenrubbertireswereintroduced.Aroundthesametime,thefrontwheelsbegantogrowlargerwhilethebackwheelsgotsmaller.Duringthe1880s,bicyclesenjoyedasuddengrowthinpopularity.However,theyweren’tverysafe.Sittinghighuptowardsthefrontofthebicycleandtravelingveryfast,theridercouldbeeasilythrownoverthefrontwheelifthebicyclehitasmallstone.Fortunately,the“safetybicycle”wasinventedin1884.Thesafetybicyclehadequal-sizedwheelsandtireswithairinthem.Andmoreimprovementsquicklyfollowed.Nodoubttherewillbefurtherimprovementsindesignandmaterialsinthefuture.
