每年只要我一要讲完美主义的课

就有点坏事要发生
somethinghappens.
第一年

我记得我是把电脑忘在了家里

第二年投影仪又坏了

而这一年我忘了带电源线了

所以希望这点电能支持一个学期

我们也从最顶尖的生意人身上看到

不管是IBM创始人ThomasWatson还是

我们从艺术家和科学家身上看到

但是那些最为成功的人都会

atUniversityofSouthernCalifornia-WarrenBennis.
WarrenBennis写了一本书
AndWarrenBenniswroteabook,
名叫做《极客与怪杰》
whichiscalled"
GeeksandGeezers"
.
在这本书里

他将非常年轻的顶多30岁出头的
hecomparedverysuccessfulleaderswhowereyoung,
年轻成功人士和老一代的

真正有所成就的划时代领袖人物

他们多在七十岁八十岁甚至九十岁以上

他将两组人进行了对比

而他发现有一些

非常有趣同时也很有意义的差异

存在于年轻的二十多到三十出头的成功人士

和年长的成功领袖人物之间

其中最明显的差异就是

工作与生活的平衡

这对于年轻的成功人士来说非常重要

非常重要他们自己也经常谈论这个

但是对于年老一代的成功人士那里

这几乎完全就是一个外来观念

这是什么意思啊为什么会这样呢

Why?
因为他们总是处在工作中
Becausetheywereatworkusually24/7.
在那个样本中所有人都是男性
Alloftheminthatsampleweremen.
而女性则待在家里负责生活的部分
Andthewomenwereathome,takingcareofthelifepart.
所以说他们的工作与生活的平衡是
Sotherewasaworklifebalance-wheretheyweredoingthework,
丈夫负责工作妻子负责照顾生活
thewivesweredoingthelife.
在年轻成功人士的样本里男女都有
Whereastheyoungergeneration,menandwomeninthatsample
那他们自然会谈论到工作与生活的平衡
andtalkingabouttheworklifebalance.
两代人之间还有其它的不同
Thereareafewotherdifferencesaswell,
但是也有一个相同点
butthereisonesimilarity,
这一点对于两代人来说都是一样的

那就是有至少一次

一般来说要多于一次的显著的失败

一次灾难

无论是重要的竞争失败或者失去了工作

还是受到了屈辱失去了亲人

一些严重的考验一次失败的经历

这是两代人都共同拥有的

他们都将失败看做一个关键点

一个生活的转折点

一些帮助造就今天的他们的因素

再说一遍我不是说已经发生的是好事

而是他们能够好好利用已经发生的事

每个人都会经历考验

都会面临困难和阻碍
throughouttheirlives,hardships,difficulties,
但是那些极度成功的人
butdifferencebetweenthehighlysuccessfulpeople,
如WarrenBennis的书里面写到的那些人

和一般人的不同之处在于
andmanyotherpeopleisthat
他们能够好好地利用已经发生的事情
theyareabletomakethebestofwhathappens.
他们将这些事情看成机遇

一种学习的经历一块垫脚石
alearningexperience,asteppingstone.
这就是失败对于适应力与完善人格的作用
Theimportanceoffailureforresilience,forwellbeingaswell.
我们继续来定义一下完美主义吧
Soletmemoveonanddefinewhatwemeanbyperfectionism.
因为现在有很多的定义
Becausetherearemanydefinitions
我们经常提及这个词
andwethrowthatwordaroundconstantly.
但我要说的完美主义是什么
ButwhatdoIactuallymeanbyperfectionism?
我的定义是
Idefineitas:
一种充斥在我们生活中的对失败的失能性恐惧
anincapacitatingfearoffailurethatpermeatesourlives,
尤其是在我们最在意的方面
especiallythoseareasthatwecareaboutmost.
注意"
失能性"
这个词不只是对失败的恐惧
Notethewordincapacitating.Itisnotjustafearoffailure.
好吧我也不认识哪怕一个不害怕失败
OKIdon'
tknowapersonwhoisnotafraidoffailure,
也不会因为失败感到尴尬或沮丧的人
whoisnotembarrassedbyitorfeelsfrustratedbyit.
这是很自然的
Sothat'
snatural.
这就是人性不管我们喜欢不喜欢
That'
shuman-whetherwelikeitornot.
但对失败的失能性畏惧是
Butanincapacitatingfearoffailureisthefailure
一种让我们在面对问题的时候
thatisdebilitatingus,thatstopsus,thatpreventsus
裹足不前的的畏惧
fromcoping,fromtrying,fromputtingourselvesontheline.
而我要在这个定义里强调的另一点
AndtheotherpartthatIwanttohighlightinthisdefinition
就是"
尤其是我们最在意的方面"
isthat"
especiallythoseareasthatwecareaboutmost"
你们也明白
Youknow,
我在玩大富翁的时候可不是完美主义者
IamnotaperfectionistwhenitcomestoplayingMonopoly.
这也不是因为...

这的确很有竞争性
scompetitive.
但是对于我来说胜败并不重要
butit'
snotthatimportantformeifIwinorlose.
但是完美主义确是我生活的重心
Butperfectionismwasacentralpartofmylife
比如说就如同我提到过的

壁球对我而言非常重要

学术对我而言也非常重要
academicswhichisverymeaningfultome,and
和别人的关系对我来说也非常重要
relationshipswhichwasandisaveryimportantpartofmylife.
在这些方面我就体会到了完美主义
Sointheseareas,that'

也是在这些方面我必须并且一直在努力
andthat'
swhereIneededtodotheworkandstilldoingthework
在这些方面让我详细说明一下
sinthoseareas.Letmeelaborateonthisdefinition.
这是我们在面对人生的旅途的时候
Itisanapproach,acognitiveandemotionalschema,
也是我们从A点到B点的过程中
thatweholdtowardthejourneyofourlives,
采取的一种方式一种认知与情感的基模
towardtheprocessofgettingfrompointAtopointB.
重点在旅途上面
Theemphasishereisonjourney.
一个追求卓越的人仍可能和完美主义者
Apersoncommittedtoexcellencecanstillbeasambitious
一样或者比完美主义者更有野心
andmoreambitiousthanaperfectionist.
两者之间的不同
Thedifferencebetweenthetwo
在于他们面对旅途时的方式
isjusttheirapproachtowardthejourney.
我来举个例子首先是一个完美主义者

他正站在A点

他想到B点去

什么是最完美最有效率的方式呢

这就是路线这就完美主义者在面对
Thisisthepath-thisisthecognitiveandemotionalschema
旅途的时候抱有的认知与感情的基模
thattheperfectionisthaswhenheorshelooksatthejourney,
怎么从起点到终点
howtheywanttogetfromwheretheyarenowtowheretheywanttogetto.

和完美主义者一样雄心勃勃
