1Programmedescription
ThePre-sessionalProgrammeisashort,intensivecoursedesignedforstudentswhoneedtoimprovetheirEnglishlanguagelevelbeforestartingadegreeprogrammeatNewcastleUniversity.ThecourseconcentratesonacademicEnglishandpreparingstudentsforuniversitystudyintheUKby:
•helpingthemdevelopthelanguageandacademicskillsneededtosuccessfullyembarkuponadegreeprogrammeinanEnglishlanguageuniversity
•enablingthemtoadjusttothedemands,challengesandexpectationsofUKhighereducationandculture
•providingthemwithashortperiodoftimetoadapttolivingandstudyingintheUKpriortobeginningtheiracademicstudies.
Therearetwoentryrequirements:
academicandlanguage.Firstly,studentsmustalreadyholdanofferofaplaceonadegreeprogrammeatNewcastleUniversity.Secondly,thestandardlanguageentryrequirementsfortheten-weekprogrammeareasbelow:

NotethatsomedegreeprogrammesrequireahigherEnglishlanguagelevelforentrytothePre-sessionalEnglishcourse.
Therearetwocohorts:
aten-weekandasix-weekcohort.Eachcohortismadeupoftwotypesofstudents:
continuingstudentsandnewstudents.ThecontinuingstudentshavebeenstudyingontheEnglishforUniversityStudies(EUS)programmeatINTONewcastleforatleastoneterm.Continuingandnewstudentsmaybemixedinthesameclass.
Classesaretypicallymadeupofapproximately85%Chineseand10%Saudistudentsintheirearlytwenties.Thevastmajorityofstudentswillprogressontopostgraduatecourses,manywiththeNewcastleUniversityBusinessSchool(40%),TheSchoolofElectrical,ElectronicandComputerEngineering(10%)andTheSchoolofEducation,CommunicationandLanguageSciences(10%).
2Successfulcompletion
ForstudentstoprogresstotheirdegreeprogrammestheyneedtosuccessfullycompletethePre-SessionalProgramme.

Successfulcompletion'
requiresstudentstomeetallofthefollowingcriteria:
∙Attendanceontheprogramme(minimum90%)
∙Satisfactorycompletionofbothawrittenassignmentandpresentation
∙Completionofallcomponentsofthefinalassessment
PleasenotethatstudentsdonotneedtoobtainaparticularscoreintheirfinalassessmenttoproceedtotheirUniversitydegreeprovidingthattheysuccessfullycompletetheprogramme.However,tosatisfyUKVIvisaregulations,studentsmustalsogainaminimumof55(IELTS5.5)ineachofthefourpartsofthefinalassessment.

Studentshavea3-dayinductionperiod,runningfromThursdayweek0toMondayweek1.Thisincludesregistration,talksbywelfareandstudentservices,anentrytest,academicinductionbytheProgrammeManagerandtimetablehandoutwiththeclasstutor.

ThefirstblockofteachingstartsonTuesdayweek1andendsonMondayweek9.
Assessmentperiod
TheassessmentperiodrunsfromTuesdaytoFridayweek9.Studentssubmittheirwrittenassignmentandhaveaformalassessmentoftheirreading,writing,listeningandpresentationskills.
BlockBofclasses
Somestudentswhoareoverlyfocussedonthefinaltestsmayseenopointincontinuingtostudyonceassessmentisover.However,longertermaimsremain(preparingthemfortheirMasterscourse),theyarestillpayingforclassesandsomestudentscomplainifthistimeisusedfor‘funandgames’.Forthesereasons,itisnecessarytocontinueclassesfromTuesdaytoThursdayweek10.PleasenotethatMondayweek10isaBankHoliday,whilestudentshavealectureaboutIn-SessionalteachingandTranscripthandoutonFridayweek10.

Twoteacherssharetwoclasses.Themaintutorofoneclassisthesecondtutoroftheotherandviceversa.Themaintutorteachesreadingandwritingskills,grammarandvocabulary,andtakesresponsibilityfortheresearchproject.Themaintutormarkstheassignmentplanandfirstdraftandconductsbothfeedbacktutorials,althoughthefinaldraftismarkedbyanotherteacher.Thesecondtutorteacheslistening,presentationandseminarskills.

6Homework
Inadditiontotwenty(academic)hoursoflessonsperweek,studentsarealsoexpectedtocompleteanadditionaltwentyhoursofhomework.Thesemaytaketheformoftasksscheduledinthedailyschemesofwork,self-studytasksmadeavailableviaBlackboardandadditionaltaskssetbytheteacher.
Thedailyreadingandwritingschemeofworkhasbeendesignedtoworkinoneoftwoways.Thefirstoptionisthemoretraditionalapproachinwhichthe“Inputmaterials”areusedinclassandthe“Practicematerials”startedinclassandfinishedoffforhomework.Inthesecondoption,basedon“Theflippedclassroom”approach,the“Inputmaterials”arecompletedaspreparationbeforeclassandthe“Practicematerials”formthemainfocusofclasswork.Theteachershouldchoosetheoptionbestsuitedtohis/herstudentsandtheirpreferredlearningstyle.
Pre-sessionalstudentswillalsobeprovidedwithadditionalon-lineself-studytasksviaBlackboard.Thesetasksprovidestudentswitharangeofmaterialstohelpthemimprovetheirgrammar,vocabulary,writing,speaking,listeningandreading.Studentsarenotexpectedtocompleteallofthesetasks,butidentifyandfocusontheirweakestareas.Thesetasksareself-markinganddonotneedtobe‘managed’bytheteacherinanyway.Nevertheless,studentsarerequiredtosubmitarecordsheeteachweekwhichtheteachermaycheckiftheyseefit.
Finally,teachersmaysettheirownhomeworktasks,eitherasfollowupto,oraspreparationforclasswork.Onceagain,trainingonsettingup,submittingandmarkinghomeworktasksonBlackboardwillbeprovided.
