InMarch1909,EmilywasarrestedwhileattemptingtohandapetitiontothePrimeMinister.Emilywasfoundguiltyofcausingadisturbanceandsentencedtoone-monthimprisonment.InSeptember1909shereceivedasentenceoftwomonthsforstonethrowing.Shewasreleasedaftergoingonhungerstrike.

Afewdaysafterleavingprison,EmilyDavison,MaryLeighandConstanceLyttonwerecaughtthrowingstonesatacartaking

DavidLloydGeorge,theChancelloroftheExchequer,toameetinginNewcastle.Thewomenweresentencedtoonemonth'

shardlabor.Thewomenwentonhungerstrikebutthistimetheprisonauthoritiesdecidedtoforce-feedthewomen.Inanattempttoavoidforce-feeding,Emilyusedprisonfurnituretobarricadethedoorofherprisoncell.Aprisonofficerclimbedaladderandafterforcingthenozzleofahosepipethroughawindow,filledupthecellwithwater.Emilywaswillingtodie,butbeforethecellhadbeencompletelyfilledwithwaterthedoorwasbrokendown.

ThescaleofhermilitantactsincreasedandinDecember1911shewasarrestedforsettingfiretopillarboxes.Shewassentencedtosixmonthsandduringherspellinprisonshewentontwohungerstrikes.EmilyDavisonwasnowconvincedthatwomenwouldnotwinthevoteuntilthesuffragettemovementhadamartyr.Emilytookthedecisiontodrawattentiontothesuffragettecampaignbyjumpingdownanironstaircase.Emilylandedonwirenetting,30feetbelow.Thispreventedherdeathbutshesufferedseverespinalinjuries.

Onceshehadrecoveredherhealth,EmilyDavisonbeganmakingplanstocommitanactthatwouldgivethemomentmaximumpublicity.InJune1913,atthemostimportantraceoftheyear—theDerby,EmilyranoutonthecourseandattemptedtograbthebridleofAnmer,ahorseownedbyKingGeorgeV.ThehorsehitEmilyandtheimpactfracturedherskullandshediedwithoutregainingconsciousness.
